Position Summary:

Under the direction of the SBA Department Manager, is responsible for analyzing financial data, evaluating collateral, structuring the loan, preparing credit authorizations, analyzing portfolio credit quality, and presenting credit requests to Loan Approval Committees. In coordination with the SBA Department Manager, this position will be responsible for managing client relationships and portfolio credit quality. This position is considered a lead and will provide other SBA Underwriters functional leadership, including training responsibility.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Works with SBA/USDA Lender (BDO) to manage customer relationships and loan portfolios
  • Acts as support and backup to the other SBA team members - lender, processor, underwriter, portfolio and Servicing Manager, SBA Operations Manager, SBA Department Manager
  • Provides excellent customer service and support to the SBA BDO, SBA team members, the referring broker, and the borrower
  • Maintains an updated and thorough knowledge of the SBA/USDA Standard Operating Procedures as well as SBA/USDA loan underwriting techniques and eligibility requirements and must be able to communicate this knowledge to internal and external customers
  • Maintains a working knowledge of all SBA/USDA forms and statements along with how to complete the documentation as called for by the SBA, USDA, and any other government-guaranteed loan programs
  • Knowledge with CAFS, Etran, other platforms in connection with SBA
  • Spreads and/or analyzes financial statements of potential and existing customers utilizing the bank's accepted analytical credit criteria, assuring that SBA/USDA underwriting requirements are addressed
  • Reviews reports and verifications from the third party to ensure the collateral can be appropriately secured. Reports and verifications are but not limited to credit reports, flood zone determinations, UCC filings, title reports, tax verifications, and others as needed
  • Completes a credit authorization following established SBA/USDA and SaviBank guidelines for both underwriting and loan eligibility
  • Reviews for any potential issues during the loan approval process. Works with the lender and/or customers to address any issues identified
  • Obtains loan approval from the appropriate authority
  • Provides written Commitment Letters for approved loans
  • May participate in closing calls with customers and lenders
  • Work with the SBA Loan Processor(s) to process and follow up on SBA forms that require additional screening
  • Maintains an ongoing relationship with SBA personnel to include the SBA local district office along with the three SBA national offices, the USDA local, regional and national offices, and any other applicable government loan agency
  • Maintains knowledge of critical issues with SBA to avoid repair or denial of guarantee
  • Works with SBA Portfolio and Servicing Manager in monitoring customer accounts and loan portfolios to detect changes that might affect their credit standing
  • Assists with loan reviews as required
  • Assists with monitoring compliance with loan agreement covenants
  • Accompanies SBA Lender (BDO) on sales calls/customer calls, as needed
  • Acts as liaison between SBA and other departments, as required
  • Assists in the development and training of other SBA Underwriters
  • Must comply with applicable laws and regulations, including but not limited to the Bank Secrecy Act, the Patriot Act, and the Office of Foreign Assets Control
  • Performs related duties as assigned

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting and Six (6) years of banking experience directly related to SBA/USDA credit analysis/underwriting; OR
  • Ten (10) years of banking experience directly related to commercial credit analysis; OR
  • A combination of education and experience which provides the equivalent
  • Strong computer skills with a knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Word and Excel
