We approach problems with creativity and innovation. The Blacksburg, VA office of Schnabel Engineering is seeking a Soil/Concrete Lab and Field Technician to join our growing practice. We are looking for a motivated candidate with attention to detail, a passion to continue to develop as a professional, and a desire to be part of a strong team. The position is primarily based in our onsite soil and concrete laboratory but may also require periodic field observation and testing on outdoor construction sites.

Job Responsibilities:

• Process soil samples and perform soil laboratory testing
• Perform concrete laboratory testing
• Pick up concrete cylinders from field locations for testing in the laboratory
• Perform field observation and testing during placement of construction materials including soil, concrete, asphalt, masonry, and sprayed-on fireproofing

Required Skills/Experience/Documents:

• High School Degree
• Valid Driver’s License
• Possess good oral, written, communication, and organizational skills
• Able to perform rudimentary mathematic computations
• Attentive to detail
• Interest in working both in an indoor laboratory setting and outdoors on construction sites
• Candidates must be able to lift 50 - 75 pounds on an occasional basis and be physically able to negotiate construction sites, climb ladders and work outside

Desired Skills/Experience:

• Soil/construction materials testing or construction related experience preferred, but not required

Other Requirements:

• Ability to pass a background check which may include criminal history, motor vehicle record and credit check
• Ability to pass a pre-employment screening
