Position / Title: Behavior Specialist Bargaining Unit: ETA Department/Location: Specialized Student Services Work Days: 184 Reports To: Director of Specialized Student Services JD Revision Date: 09/11/2023 Supervises: N/A
Function / Position SummaryTo work collaboratively with school teams, parents, students, building and district administration in the development and delivery of behavioral supports for special education students with an emotional disability or referred for possible eligibility.
Job Duties / Responsibilities
  • Prioritize and respond effectively to behavioral referrals presented to service team after initial interventions and data collection have occurred
  • Collaboratively develop supports, strategies, and training materials to ensure that building teams are using effective, research based interventions in supporting students with social emotional needs and behaviors challenges currently going through the eligibility process or identified as a student with and emotional disability.
  • Collaborate with the building’s service team including parents and outside agencies when a student exhibits severe behavior problems in the school environment.
  • Facilitate and coach teams through the development and implementation of functional behavior assessments/behavior intervention plans and crisis plans for special education students and general education students referred for a case study evaluation
  • Provide consultation to teams of students in self-contained/restrictive educational environments identified with an emotional disability if ongoing supports and services are being unsuccessful, or if the student’s behaviors are unusual in form or intensity
  • Review and summarize data collected during the implementation of behavior plans, and make recommendations for adjustments to the supports and strategies being implemented.
  • Consult with building teams to develop or to revise a classroom behavior plan in a general education classroom, or a self-contained special education classroom, or a classroom in a more restrictive setting.
  • Monitor student behavior/academic progress, make recommendations for ongoing service, communicate with parents concerning the status of behavior in the home and recommendations that can be transitioned between school and home.
  • Participate in meetings related to all of the above activities, and play a part in other meetings as requested by district administrators
  • Provide training in the use of data collection, positive behavior supports, intervention techniques, and instructional methodologies to educational staff
  • Provide strategies and supports to parents of district students with behavioral challenges and parents of district students with an emotional disability.
  • Travel to school sites as required for observations, interviews, intervention implementation, integrity checks, staff training, and follow-up procedures.
Education
  • Experience in working with students with significant behavioral difficulties
  • Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) certification
  • Masters Degree in Education, Psychology, and/or Behavior Analysis
  • Bilingual - Spanish/English (written/verbal) preferred.
Experience / Knowledge
  • Extensive knowledge and background in problem-solving and behavior management strategies
  • Demonstrate expertise in the area of data collection and behavior analysis
  • Maintain a thorough understanding of federal, state, and district guidelines and regulations regarding emotional disability eligibility, FBA/BIPs, and use of restrictive interventions
  • Strong knowledge and skills in the implementation of techniques and methodologies for effectively addressing the difficulties exhibited by students with emotional/social problems which interfere with their learning in the classroom
  • Demonstrated analytical, verbal, and written communication and presentation skills
  • Knowledge of applicable laws, codes, regulations, policies and procedures
  • Skillful in effective interactions with team members, administrators, and staff
Physical Demands
  • Ability to work in a fast paced environment
  • Ability to work with many interruptions through the course of the day
  • Requires prolonged sitting, standing, stooping and bending.
  • Occasionally requires physical exertion to manually move, lift carry, pull, or push heavy objects or materials.
Terms of Employment
  • This is a 9-month position.
  • Salary and benefits as established by the Board of Education.
