Function / Position SummaryTo organize, support, and guide the functions of the school counseling programs for all schools in the district. Works in collaboration with the Director of Post Secondary Success to develop systems and coordinate professional development for all school counselors; oversees the implementation and support of the College and Career platform and U-46 counseling framework, supports counselors in their development of four and six year plans for students; supports planning and coordination of AP, IB, Dual-Credit programming and State testing for all secondary schools; and develops, distributes, and collates student surveys. The counselor in this position will also collect data on course enrollment, assist with early college credit and educational pathways development and implementation, track student success and post-graduation (2 years and 4 years out) data.
Job Duties / Responsibilities
  • Implement and maintain the U-46 School Counseling Framework.
  • Represents the needs of the School Counselors at Equity & Innovation, Teaching & Learning, Curriculum & Instruction and other District and school meetings.
  • Plans and coordinates professional development for school counselors and registrars during monthly meetings, on district collaboration days and on professional practice days on academic, social emotional, equity-related, and post secondary topics and practices.
  • Works to establish district-wide counseling processes, procedures, and curriculum following U-46 Counseling, ISBE, ASCA, and ISCA frameworks which include focus on academic, social emotional and post secondary needs of our students.
  • In collaboration with the District Records Office, works to implement policies and develop procedures for registration.
  • Provide individualized and classroom-based support to assigned teachers in implementing instructional strategies in alignment with the Danielson framework, U-46 Rising and the Instructional Clarity Framework.
  • Plan and facilitate session(s) during New Teacher Orientation (NTO) and NTO extension.
  • Develops professional development for both school counselors and registrars to support district processes and procedures.
  • Meets with counselors and administrative leads as a whole group and at their buildings to discuss program needs and/or to support the implementation of academic, social emotional, and post secondary programmatic changes and training.
  • Collaborates with the Department of Post Secondary Success on all post secondary activities, committees, and workshops.
  • Works with information services and counselors to develop and implement a 4 and 6-year high school and career readiness plan in the Student Information System and the College and Career platform.
  • Assist in developing, implementing and monitoring robust college, career and civic-life (postsecondary) cultures at each school.
  • Develops, implements, and monitors professional learning and ongoing support for the implementation of the College and Career platform for various end-users at all secondary sites.
  • Helps plan district AP, IB, Industry Certification, PSAT, and SAT test administration in collaboration with district representatives in Teaching & Learning, Equity & Innovation, and Office of Schools. Support the counselors in their analyzing of standardized tests and school-wide surveys, (5 Essentials, Panorama, etc.).
  • Provide support to the school counselors and administrators for the administration and interpretation of standardized tests and school-wide surveys, (5 Essentials, Panorama, Universal Screeners, etc) to enable them to give additional support for students’ academic, social emotional, and post secondary success.
  • Develops, distributes, and prepares an analysis of results of locally-created student surveys, National Clearinghouse Data, post secondary data and other counseling and post secondary information.
  • Attend building-level school counseling meetings.
  • Support counselors in developing and implementing strategies to identify and support student academic, social emotional and post secondary needs; provides targeted coaching and development around identified key areas of need.
  • Provide SEL professional development and learning opportunities for counselors so they are able to provide direct support service to students individually, in small groups, and/or classrooms, which includes an effective referral and follow-up process for students’ academic, social emotional, and post secondary well-being.
  • Takes an active approach to be visible and accessible to our staff, students and families.
  • Work collaboratively with school counselors, MTSS, lead social worker, school social workers, teachers, administrators, and other support staff to meet building and district needs.
  • Plan and implement new school counselor training at New Teacher Orientation.
  • Plan and implement district-wide college and career exploration and recruitment events, social emotional learning workshops, and other ASCA/ISCA suggested activities for counselors, students, families and other school personnel.
  • Provide resources and materials to support staff in accomplishing program goals.
  • Collects and analyzes data to ensure fair and equitable representation across programs is evident.
  • Remains up to date on current and relevant research, best practices, and other pertinent policies that relate to or impact efforts related to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI).
  • Serves as a liaison for the Department of Equity and Innovation at all counselor related meetings.
  • Participates, when necessary, on Continuous Improvement Team/Leadership Teams.
  • Serve as a peer consulting teacher if/when matched with a potential Participating Teacher to discuss the Peer Assistance Review (PAR) Program, to establish mutually agreed upon performance goals, to develop a Professional Development Plan (PDP), and to develop a process for the successful completion of the PAR program. The process will be confidential and non-evaluative.
  • As a potential Peer Consulting Teacher (PCT), conduct a minimum of 5 observations per semester of the Participating Teacher during classroom instruction and provide specific, immediate feedback after each visit, including maintaining a written log of contacts and specific support given to each Participating Teacher as well as monitoring progress and providing periodic written and/or oral reports to the Participating Teacher for discussion and review.
  • Participate in meetings and prepare and discuss reports to share with the PAR panel upon request.
  • Maintain a high level of confidentiality.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Education
  • Master’s degree in related subjects from an accredited university.
  • Illinois Professional Educator License with School Counselor endorsement.
  • Performance Evaluation Qualifications (Teacher) required.
Experience / Knowledge
  • School counseling experience in SD U-46 is preferred.
  • Must demonstrate and follow the ASCA Mindsets & Behaviors for Student Success.
  • Must demonstrate knowledge of college and career counseling and have a sense of urgency in accomplishing goals and objectives to ensure success.
  • Must understand adolescent behavior.
  • Must have excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Must exhibit willingness and capacity to use all forms of current technology.
Physical Demands
  • Requires prolonged sitting or standing.
  • Occasionally requires physical exertion to manually move, lift, carry, pull, or push heavy objects or materials.
Terms of Employment

  • 7.5-hour day per the ETA Agreement
