SALARY : $26.83 / hr. - 17 hrs / week - no benefits.

JOB DESCRIPTION : The position involves responsibility for investigating criminal matters for the Public Defender. The work includes interviewing clients and witnesses.

The work is performed under general direction of the Public Defender, or other authorized employee of the office, with wide leeway allowed in planning and carrying out work assignments.

Supervision is not normally a responsibility of this position. An investigator does related work as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS :

• Possession of an Associate’s Degree (or higher) in criminal justice, psychology, or closely related field AND two years of full time or part-time equivalent experience in law enforcement, criminal defense work, or other criminal investigation work, OR
• Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and five years of full time or part-time equivalent experience in law enforcement, criminal defense work, or other criminal investigation work.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT : Possession of a valid NYS driver’s license at time of appointment. This license must be maintained throughout appointment.

VACANCY : At the present time, there is one part time 17 hour per week opening in the Schuyler County Public Defender’s Office.

The person hired will need to take a Civil Service test at a later date and be reachable on the list to gain permanency in the position.

There are no benefits associated with this part time position.

RESIDENCY REQUIREMENT : Candidates must have been legal residents of Schuyler or a contiguous (Chemung, Seneca, Steuben, Tompkins, and Yates) county for at least one month immediately preceding the date of application.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES : (Illustrative Only)

• Perform investigative functions in Criminal cases and / or Family Court cases.
• Interview clients, their relatives, friends, and others to obtain information and gather evidence.
• Interview witnesses and complainants.
• Collect, assemble, photograph, inspect, preserve, and report facts and evidence.
• Serve subpoenas and other legal documents when necessary.
• Secure appropriate arrest papers with supporting depositions.
• Interview clients at the county jail, state prison, court, office, or other site to determine eligibility and elicit statements regarding the offense(s) the client is charged with.
• Perform other investigative duties as directed.
