Job Description

Job Title: EDUCATIONAL ASSISTANT - Youth Transition Program Specialist

Reports To: Special Education Director

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

JOB SUMMARY

This position provides transition services for identified Youth Transition Program (YTP) students. The ability to carry out duties and responsibilities in a successful manner with minimum supervision is essential.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Essential duties of this position include the following. Employees in this position perform some or all of the following tasks. Other duties may be assigned.

  1. Follows and maintains knowledge of district policies and procedures.
  2. Identifies and refers students to Oregon Vocational Rehabilitation Service (OVRS).
  3. Secures school documentation of disability and relevant anecdotal information to assist Youth Transition Program (YTP) team in determining eligibility for OVRS services.
  4. Provides a variety of Pre-ETS transition services such as but not limited to: development of work experiences, job shadows and career exploration activities and provides job coaching..
  5. Advocates for students to ensure that they have access to district training opportunities and resources that are needed in order for the student to achieve a successful school-to-career transition. 
  6. Provides referral and access to individualized and group activities that are beyond the training or resources that are available to the general student body. Examples include job clubs, community-based work experiences, work skill development, job coaching, community mobility training, selection or enrollment in post-secondary training, arranging for long-term employment supports, etc. 
  7. Provides individualized job development for both work experience and career related employment.
  8. Takes lead responsibility assisting the student to ensure that the Pre-ETS are carried out.
  9. Collects and reports data to the YTP technical assistance provider to document student progress toward completion of Pre-ETS activities.
  10. Attends training and meetings provided by agencies designated for YTP’s statewide.
  11. Participates effectively at regular team meetings with teachers and other support staff using appropriate social skills, problem solving and conflict resolution strategies.
  12. Maintains a safe environment for students at all times.
  13. Problem solves to find solutions to problems between students.
  14. Reports safety, sanitary and fire hazards immediately to the supervisor.
  15. Interacts thoughtfully and courteously with students, staff and parents and resolves conflict in a professional manner.
  16. Professionally represents the school and the district in interactions with parents, community, staff and students. 
  17. Maintains appropriate certifications and training hours as required. 
  18. Complies with applicable district, state, local and federal laws, rules and regulations.
  19. Attends work regularly and is punctual.

MARGINAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Marginal duties of this position include the following. Employees in this position perform some or all of the following tasks. Other duties may be assigned.

  1. Maintains a positive relationship with the business community that results in student success and business satisfaction on an ongoing basis.
  2. Attends in-service trainings.
  3. Attends staff meetings as requested.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

All school employees have some responsibility for supervising students and assisting in maintaining a safe environment.

QUALIFICATIONS

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required. Associate's degree (A.A.) or equivalent from two-year college or technical school or one to two years' related experience and/or training or equivalent combination of education and experience is preferred. Must meet current state and federal requirements. Prior successful experience working with hearing impaired student population strongly preferred.

Works well with others from diverse backgrounds. Focuses on solving conflict; maintaining confidentiality; listening to others without interrupting; keeping emotions under control; remaining open to others’ ideas and contributing to building a positive team spirit. Demonstrates ability to successfully work with individuals with disabilities and effectively communicate on their behalf.

Ability to communicate fluently in English both verbally and in writing. Ability to effectively present information and respond effectively to questions in one-on-one, small and large group situations to students and other school staff and parents. Ability to verbally respond to common inquiries from students. Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, procedure manuals and governmental regulations. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.

Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals. Ability to compute ratio and percent and to draw and interpret graphs. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form.

General knowledge of computer usage and ability to use, e-mail, internet software, spreadsheets and word processing software.

Ability to appropriately communicate with students, teachers, parents and members of the community. Ability to exercise good judgment and work in an environment with frequent interruptions in a variety of settings. 

Certificates as determined by the district including meeting current state and federal certification requirements. Must have possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid Oregon Driver License prior to beginning work. Ability to obtain a valid CPR/First Aid card, bloodborne pathogen training and blood spill training.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear; use hands for fine manipulation, handle or feel and reach with hands and arms. The employee is frequently required to walk, sit and stand. The employee is occasionally required to stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 20 pounds and occasionally up to 60 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, ability to adjust focus and peripheral vision.

The noise level in the work environment is usually low to moderate, but occasionally high depending upon the student population and activities. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet or humid conditions and outdoor weather conditions.
