Scion Executive Search has been retained to conduct the search for the incoming Director of Finance for Second Chance Center, a rapidly growing nonprofit with a mission to help formerly incarcerated people transition to lives of success and fulfillment. Reporting concurrently to the Executive Director and Deputy Executive Director, this leadership opportunity is available for immediate hire for candidates based in the organizations headquarters in Aurora, Colorado.
ABOUT SECOND CHANCE CENTER:Founded in 2012, Second Chance Center (SCC) is Colorados largest re-entry organization, dedicated to supporting justice-involved individuals as they transition from incarceration to successful reintegration into society. We offer a holistic approach to meeting our clients' needs through a comprehensive range of supportive service programming and vital care management services.
  • HOUSING: SCC provides a comprehensive approach to housing, including immediate shelter post-release, transitional housing for stability, workforce housing for those preparing for independence, and permanent supportive housing for older individuals and those with disabilities. We partnered in the development of Providence At the Heights (PATH), a 50-unit permanent supportive housing building where we provide all on-site supportive services. We are currently developing Residences on Acoma, a 128-unit building in Denver, which will include 60 permanent supportive housing units and 68 affordable workforce housing units. Housing and transportation solutions including emergency and permanent supportive housing and RTD transportation assistance.
  • EMPLOYMENT: SCC supports clients through our on-site Employment Opportunity Lab, which offers job readiness training, upskilling and reskilling programs, and employment placement support. We have established a network of fair chance hiring employer partners who provide warm referrals for clients, ensuring they have access to opportunities and support for successful employment.
  • MENTAL HEALTH: Our Community Care Collaborative (CCC) integrates professional care with non-clinical peer mentoring. Licensed clinicians on staff, including Behavioral Health Navigators and Substance Misuse Coordinators, provide referrals to our network of community providers. Peer mentors, who have lived experience, are integral to our holistic approach. We are also in the process of becoming an approved Medicaid biller.
  • BASIC NEEDS AND SUPPORT: SCC meets the basic needs of justice-involved individuals through our food, clothing, and education support programs. Our care management services ensure comprehensive support.
  • CRIMINAL JUSTICE REFORM: We advocate for systemic changes to address broader issues affecting justice-involved individuals and their communities. Our work extends beyond individual reintegration to contribute to criminal justice reform.
Following several years of unprecedented and rapid organizational expansion, Second Chance Center Seeks an exceptional Director of Finance to guide the organization toward financial sustainability and efficiency. The successful candidate will help SCC establish itself as Colorados leading community re-entry program and a model for similar organizations nationwide.
POSITION OVERVIEW:The Director of Finance will oversee Second Chance Centers accounting and financial management operations, ensuring the accuracy and efficiency of financial activities. This role includes managing audits, tax filings, reporting, and analysis, with a focus on optimizing and streamlining financial processes. The Director will also play a pivotal role in developing and monitoring the annual budget and creating both short-term and long-term financial forecasting models.
The ideal candidate will demonstrate a hands-on, collaborative approach, with the creativity and proactive mindset needed to build scalable systems for future growth and financial sustainability. This role involves managing and mentoring a current team of three, overseeing spending, compliance, and relationships with key service providers. The Director of Finance must lead with integrity, possess exceptional nonprofit accounting knowledge, and have experience managing complex revenue streams from diverse social services.
RESPONSIBILITY OVERVIEW:
  • Accounting and Financial Management: Oversee organizational accounting, bookkeeping, and budget management, including accounts payable/receivable, billing, disbursements, inventory, capital assets, banking, and payroll.
  • Audits and Tax Filings: Direct the annual audit and 990 preparation in collaboration with external auditors to ensure compliance and accuracy.
  • Budgeting and Forecasting: Develop, implement, and monitor the annual budget; create and manage short-term and long-term financial forecasting models.
  • Reporting and Analysis: Deliver monthly and quarterly financial reports, including statements of activities, fund balances, and sources/uses of funds, to Executive Leadership and the Board of Trustees. Analyze trends, revenue opportunities, and establish critical financial measurements.
  • Financial Communication: Clearly communicate monthly and annual financial statements; prepare financial reports for donors and oversee financial projects and grants accounting.
  • Financial Controls and Compliance: Ensure proper financial controls and compliance oversight for grants, contracts, and key agreements. Produce timely reports to monitor, evaluate, and optimize financial health, cash flow, and liquidity.
  • Stakeholder Relationships: Build and maintain relationships with external stakeholders, including banks, donors, vendors, and consultants, to monitor major expenditures and revenue sources.
  • Cost Management and Efficiency: Oversee financial management of programs and overhead costs, ensuring full financial recovery and efficiency. Assess operational cost-effectiveness and offer strategic recommendations for sustainable growth and optimal funding resource use.
  • Risk Management and Compliance: Direct the risk management process, implementing systems, policies, internal controls, and accounting standards to minimize risk and meet regulatory and legal compliance requirements.
  • Technology and Reporting: Utilize technology to optimize reporting and analytical functions, enhancing overall efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Team Leadership: Supervise and mentor a Finance and Accounting team of three, ensuring high performance and professional development.
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Mission-Driven: Passion for the mission of providing supportive housing, workforce development, and re-entry services.
  • Experience: Minimum of 5 years of progressive experience in nonprofit accounting and finance, including executive or senior-level management roles.
  • Nonprofit Financial Management: Extensive experience managing nonprofit finances, specifically in organizations that receive $750k in federal funding.
  • Sector Knowledge: Experience within supportive housing and/or social services nonprofits is highly preferred.
  • Medicaid Billing: Proficiency in Medicaid billing processes and compliance.
  • Revenue Streams: Proven track record managing complex, evolving revenue streams, with a focus on federal grant funding.
  • ERP Systems: Experience implementing and optimizing financial ERP systems, with NetSuite experience preferred.
  • Housing Knowledge: Familiarity with housing policies, regulations, and funding mechanisms.
  • Asset Management: Experience in asset management, including overseeing property portfolios, maximizing asset performance, and ensuring long-term sustainability.
  • Strategic Planning: Expertise in strategic fiscal planning, budgeting, and forecasting, with a proven ability to develop and monitor comprehensive financial plans.
  • Operational Skills: Strong logistical and operational skills with a history of ensuring consistency and efficiency across multi-site organizations.
  • Data Presentation: Ability to present complex financial data in clear, comprehensible terms and models.
  • Communication: Proven experience communicating financial information to diverse audiences with varying levels of financial literacy.
  • Compliance: Experience maintaining compliance and working with external auditors and regulatory oversight; experience with Single Audits is highly beneficial.
  • Organizational Skills: Strong organizational, management, communication, and analytical skills with exceptional attention to detail.
  • Change Management: Experience with change leadership and change management.
COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS: In addition to a strong base salary of $150,000 to $175,000 (DOE), this exceptional role also receives access to a comprehensive benefits package.
