Scott County, Minnesota is Hiring a Highway Maintenance Worker Near Jordan, MN

Job SummaryThe eligible register developed from this posting may be used to fill future FT and PT vacancies within this classification.Position will be open until filled.Performs skilled labor in operating heavy motorized equipment on construction, reconstruction, repair, snow removal, bituminous work, general labor work, flagging, and assisting other workers on jobs related to the maintenance of County roadways, bridges, trails, and natural spaces. Work includes weekends, nights, and holidays as required by weather and maintenance conditions.
Essential Duties
  • Maintains County roadways by grading, shaping, cleaning roads/ditches/shoulders, and drainage structures.
  • Operates such equipment as, but not limited to, single axle and tandem trucks, front end loaders, backhoes, motor graders, skid-steers, and tractors with mowers.
  • Plows and wings snow and applies ice control materials including, assessing road and weather conditions to determine appropriate application rates.
  • Performs seasonal road repair work, such as digging out frost boils, steaming open culverts, re-graveling roads, patching, culvert repair/replacement, sweeping shouldering, erosion control, concrete repair, etc.
  • Reports any equipment malfunction and makes proper equipment checks before each day's operation. Follows appropriate equipment reviews prior to use and fills out required paperwork, including operations records. Performs minor equipment repairs, assists mechanics when asked.
  • Sets up and maintains temporary traffic control devices in work zones. May assist in the installation of permanent traffic control devices.
  • Assists with County roadway construction and maintenance activities and operations, including assisting other Public Works departments, as needed.
  • Installs and repairs signs, guardrails, and mailboxes.
  • Inspects and performs spraying and removal of trees, weeds, and brush, including safe and appropriate operation of chain saws.
  • Provides technical guidance on specialized maintenance activities and assists in training of other employees.
  • Answers questions from the general public regarding maps, present snow plow cool program, etc.
  • Inspects and oversees crack filling and seal coating contractors' work on highways; prepares estimates and quantities for engineer.
  • Prepares animal removal contract and obtain quotes.
  • Leads field crew as crew chief as assigned; provides guidance, training, and checks work of seasonal employees.
  • Operate laser level to set grades for culverts, ditches, and shoulders.
  • Ability to interpret and utilize highway plan sets and right of way plats to complete projects.
  • Works the hours and/or shifts assigned and begins and ends work on time.
  • Performs other related duties as required or assigned.
Minimum QualificationsRequires equivalency of high school graduation and four years of work experience related to the construction and maintenance of roadways. Two additional years of experience in the workforce may substitute for high school diploma/GED. Must possess a valid Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with airbrake endorsement. Must obtain Class A CDL and tanker endorsement within one year of hire. Preference given for experience with bituminous, concrete, and pipe repair; snow and ice control; operating tandem-axel trucks w/plows, skid-steer loaders, and backhoes; and for MnDOT technical certifications. A pre-employment DOT drug test (in accordance with Part 382) is required.
Selection ProcessSelection for this position will be based on a minimum qualifications screening and rating of training and experience. Top candidates will be forwarded to the hiring manager or supervisor for consideration for interview and/or additional assessments. Final selection will include a background check and approval by the County Board.
