POSITION TITLE: Associate Director, Fixed Assets

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Associate Director, Fixed Assets will establish and lead our fixed assets function within the Controller organization. This strategic role will be responsible for proactively managing the institute's fixed assets portfolio and collaborating with other key stakeholders across the organization to create a holistic program to manage the entire asset lifecycle from acquisition to disposal. The ideal candidate will have a proven track record of implementing scalable best practices in fixed assets management and continuously improving the status quo.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

  • Develop and implement a strategic vision for Fixed Asset management, including streamlined and optimized policies, workflows, tools implementation, and controls for the acquisition, tracking, depreciation, and disposal of fixed assets, while ensuring compliance with federal regulations, accounting standards, and internal policies.
  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders, including procurement, research services, facilities, and faculty, to establish and manage fixed asset lifecycle management best practices.
  • Provide strategic guidance and recommendations to senior management and department heads on capital expenditure decisions, asset utilization, and lifecycle management, leveraging data and analytics to support decision-making.
  • Stay abreast of changes in accounting standards, tax regulations, and industry best practices related to fixed assets management, and proactively implement changes to ensure compliance and mitigate risks.
  • Lead, mentor, and develop the fixed asset team, fostering a culture of collaboration, accountability, and continuous improvement.
  • Details of established essential functions for this position will be addressed/discussed during the interview process. 

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Minimum of 7-10 years of progressive experience in accounting or financial management, with at least 5 years of experience in fixed assets management.
  • Expertise in accounting principles and practices related to fixed assets, including depreciation methods, capitalization thresholds, and impairment assessments.
  • Proficiency in fixed assets management software and enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems.
  • Knowledge of federal grant regulations and compliance requirements related to fixed assets management strongly preferred. Experience in non-profit organizations, preferably in a biomedical research environment, a plus.
  • Outstanding interpersonal and communication skills with proven experience in cultivating cross-collaborative working relationships across an organization and ability to influence at all levels
  • Strategic mindset coupled with the ability to roll up sleeves and desire to continually improve the status quo
  • Proven leadership with a track record of building and managing highly collaborative and effective teams, as well as spearheading and shepherding organizational and/or process transformation
  • Adept in ambiguous situations, flexible and comfortable making decisions using available data points that can be limited and/or imperfect
  • Adaptable to changing priorities while effectively managing multiple commitments, at times on tight deadlines
  • Track record of building and developing high performing, diverse teams, with a commitment to a culture of collaboration, performance, transparency and integrity
  • Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or related field; CPA or related advanced degree preferred.
  • This is an on-campus position requiring 4 days per week working onsite from our La Jolla campus, with flexibility to work 1 day per week remotely from home.

COMPENSATON: 

The expected hiring range for this position is $152,900 to $210,250/annually, commensurate with experience.
