FUNCTION OF THE UNITThe College of Sciences Student Success Center, located in GMCS 429, aims to enhance the educational experience and facilitate graduation for all students in the sciences. We work toward these goals by aiming to improve access to information, resources, academic advising, and to provide structure and support to our departmental advisers. The College of Sciences Student Success Center serves as the physical hub for our partnerships with study abroad, on and off campus internships, undergraduate research, and other undergraduate programs in the College of Sciences.
The College of Sciences Student Success Center focuses on lower division pre-major advising,exploratory major selection advising (other majors considering a science major, and science majors considering a different science major), science career related resources and advising, resources for preparation for graduate school in the sciences, and managing graduation, retention, and other student success initiatives. Moreover, the center is responsible for the identification of students with academic problems, and reaching out to intervene or provide appropriate referrals for these students as necessary.
PURPOSE OF THE POSITION
  • Implement initiatives to improve communications to students, through in-person presentations and web-based technology.
  • Facilitate student success through soft skills training development for peer mentors
  • Facilitate student success through program/workshop planning, particularly CoS Career Panel
  • Provide support to academic advisors advising new students about science majors and the CoS.
Responsibilities Advising (60%): Under the supervision of the CoS Director of Advising, and with guidance from advisors in the CoS Student Success Center (SSC) the intern will be trained to provide guidance and advising support to undergraduate students and will have the opportunity to shadow CoS SSC advising appointments. The CoS SSC intern will be trained to triage student needs, answer general questions regarding coursework and university policies, and direct students to the appropriate Academic Advisor or campus resource. The CoS SSC intern will respond to student inquiries via telephone, email, Zoom, and in-person communications and refer appropriately. The CoS SSC intern identifies and refers students to appropriate campus resources when necessary.
Under the supervision of the CoS SSC academic advisors, the CoS SSC intern will help the CoS advisors prepare 4-Year Academic Roadmaps for First-Year science students (non-transfer) as part of the Coordinated Care outreach plan. With the guidance from the SSC advisors, the intern will meet with First-Year students throughout the fall and spring to finalize the academic roadmaps. The intern will also work with CoS SSC Peer Mentors to create and lead advising tools workshops for new students.
Program Development/Implementation (25%): The CoS SSC intern assists with program planning that aims to facilitate CoS student success initiatives, such as academic and career development. The CoS SSC intern will assist CoS SSC Academic Advisors with coordinating student events and workshops for the upcoming academic year, such as conducting communication and outreach for the Careers in Sciences Panel Series and using collected data to improve any program procedures necessary. The intern will also be responsible for daily providing guidance and direction to Peer Mentors in coordinating the program as well as leading staff discussions at weekly meetings. The graduate assistant will also lead in implementing course registration workshops for Coordinated Care Advising First-year students as well as conducting advising appointments with First-year students in creating 4-year course roadmaps.
The CoS SSC intern will assist in the development and deliverance of peer mentor training materials and presentations for advising soft-skills, needed for new and continuing CoS SSC Peer Mentors; as well as making any recommendations for program improvements and projecting future student needs.The intern will also serve as the point person for providing guidance to the Peer Mentors in the SSC for advising appointments. The Intern will also be helping coordinate other science departmental workshops and potential campus wide collaborative events.
Administrative (10%): The CoS SSC intern will help the CoS SSC maintain readable and accurate online and printed materials. The intern also helps with file keeping that includes both physical and electronic files which may contain sensitive student information. Other administrative tasks that the intern will support include organizing the office, cleaning/sanitizing desks, and ordering office supplies.
The CoS Student Success Center Intern will maintain and create new forms/systems to collect data and/or student information. Some of these systems include google forms, procedure manuals, and survey responses. The intern will also support completing the CoS Student Success Center End of Year Report for the 2022-2023 school year by analyzing data from student surveys and populating data into charts/graphs.
The CoS SSC Intern will be responsible for sharing progress on their duties/responsibilities during weekly staff meetings and will get the opportunity to accompany CoS advisors to other meetings/professional development opportunities on campus.
Other duties as assigned (5%) QualificationsMinimum Education
  • Equivalent to completion of a bachelor's degree and registration in an SDSU graduate degree program
