Sempra Services Corporation is Hiring a Senior Counsel - Project Finance Near Houston, TX

Primary Purpose

U.S. energy industry experience with a focus on project finance, including LNG and low-carbon solution projects, natural gas infrastructure (including pipelines), and related infrastructure. Experience with project development and a broader debt finance background on the sponsor side is preferred.

Position will interface with colleagues across Sempra Infrastructure offices in the U.S. and Mexico, with an expectation that the candidate can independently produce client-ready documents and work with others on complex transactions. The ability to communicate business goals into contract language is preferred. Candidates should exhibit strong substantive legal skills (drafting and analysis), negotiation skills, commercial acumen, and the ability to strategically partner with the business to achieve objectives.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Coordinate, implement and monitor legal services to the business to facilitate and achieve business objectives, including working closely with internal and external counsel, along with the senior managers in the business.
  • Interact with business executives and upper management of other client groups.
  • Assist in reporting internally to the Law Department management and/or Business Unit General/Assistant General Counsel.
  • Performs other duties as assigned (no more than 5% of duties).

QualificationsEducation

  • JD (Juris Doctor) J.D. or LL.M from an accredited law school Required

Experience

  • 7 post-qualification experience in corporate transactional law, with a strong emphasis on project financing transactions required.
  • 7 Demonstrates knowledge and experience with financing terms and conditions, preferably in the U.S. energy sector on sponsor side - Required
  • 7 Experience with a well-established law firm and/or a corporate legal department preferred.
  • 7 Experience in other finance transactions (debt or equity capital markets, asset-based financing, structured transactions and derivates, currency or commodity hedging) is a plus. Preferred

Skills and Abilities

  • Able to analyze complex project risks and address these risks for purposes of debt structuring. Advanced
  • Ability to prioritize demands from multiple business clients in a fast-paced environment while maintaining attention to detail. Advanced
  • Confident in managing and directing in-house specialties and other team members. Advanced
  • Proven communication and interpersonal skills, ability to work well independently and in a team setting. Advanced
  • Ability to read and write in Spanish is a plus, but not required. Beginner

Licenses and Certifications

  • Member in good standing of a U.S. State Bar required.

Other Qualifications

Prefer candidates who desire to work out of our Houston, Texas headquarters, with availability to travel to San Diego, California, Mexico City, Mexico and other locations.

HYBRID: Work a combination of onsite and remote days each week, typically 3 days per week onsite.
