Sheboygan County Head Start

Title: Bus Driver

Status: Part-Time/Full-Time/Part Year

Reports to: Transportation Manager

Responsibilities: The Head Start Bus Driver is responsible for the safe transportation of children to and from program activities. The Bus Driver exercises good judgment in response to changing weather, traffic conditions, and routes and plans the routes in an efficient and timely manner. Communicates with the

Main Office via radio system all pertinent information and problems.

Duties:

1. Must meet any physical, mental, and other requirements as necessary to perform job-related functions with any necessary reasonable accommodations.

2. Conducts a pre-trip inspection on every vehicle driven each day and reports suspected mechanical problems at once. Completes Daily Vehicle Inspection Reports accurately and in a timely fashion.

3. Conducts a thorough post trip inspection for children and other items left on the bus by following the “Safety Alarm System Procedure”.

4. Ensures the children are released to only an authorized individual on the

Emergency/Transportation Form.

5. Drives defensively at all times, prevents accidents by compensating for the unsafe actions of other drivers, challenging road and environmental road conditions.

6. Complies with all safety requirements in the Head Start regulations, all state school bus laws and regulations, and all program procedures. Must be aware of current transportation laws and regulations.

7. Uses reasonable precaution in the performance of all duties, ensuring maximum safety to children, parents, self, the public, and fellow employees at all times.

8. Is sensitive to the needs of young children; is able to relate to children and adults from all ethnic, racial, religious, or socioeconomic backgrounds.

9. Immediately reports incidents, accidents, unusual situations that could or did place a child at risk of injury. Is able to describe such incidents accurately and in writing.

10. Reports any significant safety hazards to Transportation Manager as soon as possible.

11. Refrains from excessive conversation on the radio and with monitors, parents, or children, while driving or loading or unloading children, which could be distracting and cause an accident.

12. Courteous and professional with children, parents, staff, and the public.

13. Encourage parents to participate in all aspects of the program as described in the Head Start

Performance Standards.

14. Immediately reports suspected child abuse or neglect according to State Statutes and program requirements.

15. Conducts and documents effective “Emergency Bus Evacuation Drills” at least 4 times a year for children.

16. With the assistance of the Special Needs/Mental Health Manager and Transportation

Manager, prepares written emergency evacuation plans when transporting children with disabilities.

17. Works with the Bus Monitor to make sure baggage and other items transported in the bus ae properly stored and secured, and the aisles remain clear and the doors and emergency exits remain unobstructed at all times; and to maintain a clean and hygienic environment inside the vehicle; cleans outside as necessary.

18. When transporting children using wheelchairs or other adaptive equipment, exercises a high degree of caution, in accordance with training. As much as possible avoids sharp turns and bumps.

19. Develops a bus route that is time efficient in cooperation with the Transportation Manager.

20. Accepts vehicle assignments professionally and without resistance.

21. Is punctual and demonstrates good attendance.

22. Actively participates in all required training sessions and staff meetings.

23. Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

1. Must be a minimum of 21 years of age.

2. Must have an good driving record. Record is checked before hire. (Meet Insurance

Underwriter’s driving record requirements).

3. Possession of a current CDL with Passenger Endorsement (School Bus Endorsement).

4. Must have pre-employment drug testing and subsequent drug and alcohol testing. Has not been terminated from another job due to a safety infraction or a drug or alcohol violation.

5. Prior to transporting children, must pass a physical examination modeled on or the same as school bus drivers for the state of Wisconsin.

6. Must have Mantoux tuberculin testing upon hire.

7. Must have good oral and written communication skills.

8. Must be trained in first aide and CPR.

9. Must be accessible by and have access to a phone.

10. Must be clean and neat in appearance, serving as a role model.

11. Must be able to communicate professionally in both routine and unusual situations.

12. Must be able to work with multi-ethnic/culturally diversified people.

Physical/Mental Abilities and Processes

  • Physical capability, strength and coordination adequate to drive a 48 passenger bus.
  • Ability to visually assess the health and behaviors of children.
  • Intermediate level decisions needed to adhere to safety and scheduling considerations.
  • Occasional lifting of up to 50 lbs, typically placing children into seats and ability to carry to drag a child in a emergency situation out of the bus to a safe area.
  • Frequent bending at neck, frequent bending at waist and knees and occasional squatting.
  • Daily sitting, about 85 % of driving time.
