What are the responsibilities and job description for the Paid Summer Intern - Tourism & Events position at Shelby County?
This position will assist Shelby County’s Tourism and Events Department with organizing and planning for tourism events and initiatives within the county and the region, as well as support the implementation of the Leadership Shelby County Program. Primary responsibilities of this position include assisting the Manager and Coordinator of Tourism and Events with advertising Shelby County events, promoting Discover Shelby tourism initiatives, and marketing the amenities and assets within Shelby County.
In addition, this Tourism and Events Intern will assist the Executive Director and Coordinator of the Leadership Shelby County Program with the planning and execution of the adult leadership and youth leadership programs, preparing for Board of Directors meetings, organizing alumni events, and enhancing alumni communications.
PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS
Work is performed in an office environment 70%-80% of the time and at event sites 20%-30% of the time. Event site work may demand prolonged periods of standing or walking outdoors and some exposure to extreme weather conditions. Must be available to work outside standard business hours to include some night or weekend work at various events.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Work is moderate in nature and consists of walking, standing, bending, and carrying. Some work requires prolonged walking or standing both indoors and outdoors. A high volume of stress involved with dealing with the public and customer complaints.EXAMINATIONS: No written or performance examination will be required for this position. Marketing and Branding Communications
- Assist with the planning of marketing and branding for tourism events, including Discover Shelby initiatives, County parks and recreational opportunities, amenities, attractions, tourism-related facilities, and County activities
- Assist and market the County’s image and programming through communications to include newsletter, press releases, social and multimedia, and events to both internal and external customers
- Help identify needs and create materials to promote general awareness of county activities
- Assist in sourcing and creating content for Discover Shelby website
- Assist in sourcing and creating content for Facebook and Instagram: @discovershelbyal
- Assist in creating organic social media campaigns to garner inspiration and drive visitation to Shelby County
- Market the activities, events, and accomplishments of partners to reach overarching county promotion
Events Planning
- Assist with maintaining various databases for the department, including Event spaces, athletic venue assets, meeting assets, hotels, and all other tourism-related facilities within the county, including municipal facilities; event participation data for high attendance venues; and other county and municipal assets that can assist with event promotion, management, and execution
- Help organize required catering services, room setup, and communication equipment setup
- Perform all duties in a safe and efficient manner
- Other duties as assigned by supervisor
Leadership Shelby County (LSC)
- Assist the Executive Director with planning and coordination of the Opening Retreat, class days, and Graduation for the adult and youth programs
- Assist the Executive Director with LSC Board meeting materials
- Assist the Executive Director of LSC with the Alumni board with event planning
- Assist with outreach efforts to LSC Alumni including training, communications, and informational events
- Interest in Business, Marketing, Digital Marketing, Merchandising, Mass Communication, Public Relations or related disciplines
- Strong social media skills in Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and other currently used platforms
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Suite Programs
- Working knowledge of Canva or other design software
- Ability to multi-task and handle various operations simultaneously
- Ability to work independently while maintaining effective working relationships with coworkers, supervisors, vendors, partners, and the general public
- Strong organizational and office skills
- Strong verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills
- Valid Driver’s license and acceptable driving record

- Experience with writing: blog content and press releases
- Experience with branding and creative design
- Experience with social marketing
