Shore Educational Collaborative is Hiring a Reading Specialist (2024-25 School Year) Near Chelsea, MA

Shore Educational Collaborative was established in 1975 as one of 24 educational collaboratives in Massachusetts, providing public special education to students with disabilities. Over 180 students aged 3-22 attend our school in Chelsea, receiving a comprehensive education and related services.

Our school for students from pre-kindergarten to age 22 is hiring a Reading Specialistto work with students in all of our programs.


Job Summary:
Shore Educational Collaborative is seeking a dedicated and compassionate Reading Specialist to join our team and support students with disabilities in developing their reading skills. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in special education, literacy instruction, and experience working with children who have diverse learning needs. This role involves assessing students' reading abilities, designing and implementing individualized reading interventions, and collaborating with teachers, parents, and other specialists to create a supportive and effective learning environment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assessment and Evaluation:
  • Conduct formal and informal reading assessments to determine students' reading levels, strengths, and areas of need.
  • Analyze assessment data to develop and adjust individualized reading plans.
  • Monitor and document student progress regularly.
  • Instruction and Intervention:
  • Design and implement evidence-based reading interventions tailored to each student’s needs.
  • Provide one-on-one and small group instruction focused on phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension.
  • Utilize a variety of instructional strategies and materials to address different learning styles and abilities.
  • Collaboration and Consultation:
  • Work closely with classroom teachers and other specialists to integrate reading strategies into the general curriculum.
  • Participate in Individualized Education Program (IEP) meetings and contribute to the development of IEP goals related to literacy.
  • Communicate regularly with parents and caregivers about their child’s progress and ways to support reading development at home.
  • Professional Development:
  • Stay current with the latest research and best practices in reading instruction and special education.
  • Provide training and resources to staff on effective reading strategies for students with disabilities.
  • Participate in professional development opportunities to enhance skills and knowledge.
  • Supportive Environment:
  • Create a positive and inclusive learning environment that encourages student engagement and confidence.
  • Adapt instructional materials and approaches to meet the unique needs of each student.
  • Foster a love of reading and lifelong learning in students.

Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in Special Education, Reading, or a related field.
  • DESE certification as a Reading Specialist and/or Special Education Teacher.
  • Experience working with students with disabilities in a school setting.
  • In-depth knowledge of reading assessment tools, instructional strategies, and intervention programs.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with a team and build positive relationships with students, parents, and staff.
  • Patience, empathy, and a commitment to supporting the academic and emotional growth of students with disabilities.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with specific reading intervention programs such as Orton-Gillingham, Wilson Reading System, or similar.
  • Knowledge of assistive technology and how it can support reading instruction for students with disabilities.
  • Bilingual skills are a plus.

Salary is based on education and experience.
This position will participate in the Massachusetts Teachers' Retirement System.
