Salary Range: $15,596 - $20,575/quarter at 100%, dependent upon education/experience

The American Ethnic Studies (AES) is a Pre-Major within the Equity & Social Justice (ESJ) Department, along with the Gender and Women’s Studies Pre-Major. American Ethnic Studies includes African American Studies, American Indian Studies, Asian American and Pacific Islander Studies, Chicanx/ Latinx Studies, and Ethnomusicology. Students use the conceptual and comparative tools of history, political science and sociology to analyze lived experiences of diverse racial and ethnic peoples in the United States. Courses explore race, gender, social class, power and privilege. Students develop skills essential to promoting equity and justice in the U.S. and the world.
 
This position may require on-campus teaching with some options for virtual and hybrid teaching.
 
The Pre-Major seeks faculty who can teach one or more of the following courses:

• AES 101: Power and Positionality
• AES 101H: Power and Positionality (Honors College)
• AES 102: Introduction to Asian American and Pacific Islander Studies 
• AES 103: Introduction to African American Studies
• AES 104: Introduction to Chicanx/ Latinx Studies
• AES 105: Introduction to American Indian Studies 

 
Faculty at Shoreline will have an array of students from differing programs in their classroom, including professional technical and university transfers. Shoreline seeks a candidate that can identify and mitigate the barriers to success that many students face and be passionate about creating an equitable learning environment that supports success for all students. As such, candidate response to the supplemental question below will be the first criteria of consideration. Required Education & Experience

• Master’s degree from a regionally accredited institution in Ethnic Studies or a discipline related to one of the AES courses offered
• Experience teaching courses in a higher education environment
• Experience teaching introductory courses in American Ethnic Studies and/or African American Studies, AAPI Studies, Chicanx/ Latinx Studies, American Indian Studies, or similar content in related disciplines
• Experience teaching courses in various formats, including entirely-online, partially-online, and minimally-online

 Knowledge of

• Disciplinary knowledge of Critical Race Theory, American Ethnic Studies, and one or more fields related to American Ethnic Studies Pre-Major curricula (e.g., African American Studies, AAPI Studies, Chicanx/ Latinx Studies, American Indian Studies)
• Systemic obstacles affecting community college students 
• Microsoft Office programs, learning management systems, and other appropriate instructional technology

Skill in

• Fostering a climate of equity and belonging through multicultural awareness and responsiveness
• Teaching introductory American Ethnic Studies courses and concepts to first- and second-year college students
• Teaching students who are facing multiple and varied structural barriers 
• Effective oral and written communication with individuals at all levels inside and outside the College 
• Working and interacting effectively with colleagues, staff, students, administrators, and others of various cultural and socio-economic backgrounds 

Physical Work Environment:
 The College is currently in mixed (both in-person and online) operations, with the option for some assignments to be completed in an online environment based on program or area needs. For remote (online) instruction, faculty will need to provide their own workspace and internet access, noting the College will provide technical equipment and support for online work needs. For on-campus in-person instruction, work is usually performed in a classroom/office space that requires standing and/or sitting for extended periods of time. Faculty typically use computers and media equipment in the work environment.
Terms of Employment & Salary: 

• This is a part-time, non-tenured, quarter-to-quarter assignment.
• Salary placement is determined by the number of qualifying years of teaching/work experience combined with educational preparation. 
• Hiring of this position is contingent upon available funding as determined by the College President.
