This is a part-time faculty position for the Learning Center North (LCN) program, which is housed in Shoreline's Transitional Studies unit and part of the Center for Education and Career Opportunities (CECO). LCN is the largest high-school dropout program in the state of Washington. We work to serve students that are under-supported and under-represented within the mainstream academic system by providing wraparound services to assist in the reduction of learning, employment, and housing barriers. LCN has more than a decade of experience serving students, and successfully transitioning more than 70% to post-secondary education and/or vocational training.

This is a co-teaching position in a lecture/lab setting with a King County instructor and uses the relational model of teaching to engage with students in a one-on-one and small group setting. The part-time faculty member will be primarily focused on increasing students' math, reading, writing, and social science skills from a pre-GED to a post-GED/college preparatory level.

In addition to teaching and record-keeping, the part-time will be responsible for assessing student personal barriers while building a relationship through the wraparound services. This is a position that coordinates heavily with King County and uses County resources to support classroom learning and student success. Additional hours may be supplemented from King County if available and requested.
Qualifications

REQUIRED EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
  • Master's in Adult Education, Education, Mathematics or related field
  • Experience teaching out-of-school youth in a higher education environment or similar
  • Experience working with underserved and diverse populations experiencing learning challenges
  • Experience working with skill sets ranging from early elementary to post-secondary, primarily focused on increasing student's math, reading, writing, and social science skills
  • Experience or willingness to gain experience with teaching and developing coursework online
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:
  • Microsoft Office programs, learning management systems and other appropriate instructional technology
  • Fostering a climate of equity and belonging through multicultural awareness and responsiveness
  • Imparting excitement and enthusiasm into the instruction of basic and transitional skills
  • Experience with or willingness to gain experience with teaching and developing coursework online
  • Contributing to equity and belonging through multicultural awareness and competence
  • Effective oral/written communication with individuals at all levels inside and outside the College
  • Adapting to a variety of teaching situations with students from diverse backgrounds/abilities
  • Developing/modifying curriculum both collaboratively and independently
  • Working and interacting effectively with colleagues, staff, students, administrators and others of various cultural and socio-economic backgrounds
Conditions of Employment

PHYSICAL WORK ENVIRONMENT:
The College is currently in mixed (both in-person and online instruction) operations, with the option for some assignments to completed in a fully online environment based on program or area needs. For remote (online) instruction, faculty will need to provide their own workspace and internet access, noting the College will provide technical equipment and support for online work needs. For on-campus in-person instruction, work is usually performed in a classroom/office space that requires standing and/or sitting for extended periods of time. Faculty typically use computers and media equipment in the work environment.

TERM OF EMPLOYMENT/SALARY:
This is a part-time, non-tenured, quarter-to-quarter assignment. Salary is dependent upon the number of contact hours for this assignment as provided in the agreement with the Shoreline Community College Federation of Teachers. Hiring of this position is contingent upon available funding as determined by the College President.
