Description

Overview
At Sightglass, we aim to create a positive environment where people are challenged to do their best work and where everyone can make a difference. The VP of People and Stores serves on the company’s senior leadership team to help shape company policies and strategies, especially as a voice to make sure all major company decisions consider our people and culture. 

This role is responsible for developing, maintaining and improving Sightglass’ human resources and retail teams through planning, implementing and evaluating retail leadership, employee relations, and HR policies. The VP of People and Stores partners with the CEO to develop an employee-oriented company culture that encourages quality work, high performance, productivity, and individual development.

Qualifications


HR Responsibilities

  • Serve as a visible, involved, and engaged leader to employees throughout the organization
  • Help define overall HR strategy to drive a culture of high employee engagement in alignment with our business strategy
  • Champion and embody the Sightglass culture, mission, and values and take ownership for maintaining a strong culture defined and driven by our values
  • Identify, prioritize, design, and implement HR programs and solutions that support employees and business objectives
  • Work with management of all levels on a variety of HR and business-related issues, both strategic and operational
  • Partner with senior managers to facilitate day-to-day employee relations through effective communication, coaching, and consultation
  • Serve as a thought partner for the managers to maximize employee engagement
  • Coach managers to navigate and resolve employee relations issues and manage programs or processes that help engage and develop our people
  • Evaluate current benefits/rewards strategy; propose and implement HR programs that serve to motivate employees and maintain competitiveness
  • Maintain and communicate employee benefits programs; evaluating insurance needs and analysis as related to broker dealings or potential broker change
  • Advise on candidate recruitment and selection by helping to prepare job descriptions and job postings, receive and organize applications, and schedule interviews; advising on pay and benefits for new hires
  • Ensure every new employee has an amazing orientation experience that makes them feel welcomed, integrates them into the culture, and sets them up for success
  • Oversee professional development of our employees and implement programs that make our leaders better managers and grow our team’s capabilities
  • Execute and provide leadership, expertise, and training for recruitment, compensation, performance management, employee relations, succession planning, training/development, policy formulation, etc.
  • Resolve all HR grievances with professionalism, confidentiality and empathy aimed at making all parties involved feel supported while finding the best resolution for the company and employees
  • Ensure that managers understand and implement company policies including disciplinary procedures; hear and resolve employee grievances; counsel managers & employees
  • Conduct termination processes when an employee leaves; conduct & analyze exit interviews; communicate recommendations to management
  • Ensure legal compliance by monitoring and implementing applicable human resource federal and state requirements, conducting investigations, and maintaining records (such as the Employee Handbook, personnel records, unemployment claims, etc.)
  • Partner with the Controller on annual Workers Comp audits and policy renewal
  • Develop, implement and maintain administrative policies such as expense and compensation policies
  • Partner with the Finance to develop POPs department budget and company-wide culture budget
  • Maintain a centralized resource of company records such as event records for historical data and future planning and all department’s processes/procedures for sustainability
  • Oversee bi-weekly payroll processing, maintaining and communicating all updates of payroll processing as well as net check creations
  • Oversee PPLO, workers' comp, withholding notices, and any other regulatory agency and compliance needs related to payroll
  • Secure international travel insurance for origin or other trips to foreign destinations
  • Manage accident & injury procedures and process any worker’s compliance claims

Store Responsibilities 

  • Leads Retail Leadership team to define and execute on clear strategies and priorities to deliver consistently excellent guest experiences
  • Assess business objectives and deliver an elevated, approachable experience that is consistent and regularly assessed for improvement and innovation
  • Monitors financial performance in accordance with established operational budgets, guides teams to make smart and effective business decisions. 

Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills & Abilities)

  • 5 years experience in Human Resources roles, 2 years in leadership roles
  • Strong organizational and management skills; ability to meet crucial deadlines and keep essential records for reference
  • Demonstrate exceptional talent at putting people first while guiding others to make great people decisions
  • A natural coaching and mentoring style, listening effectively and building rapport with a diverse workforce
  • A desire to be available & approachable to all employees at all locations
  • In-depth experience in HRIS, payroll, ATS software systems. Knowledge of Paycom a plus
  • Working knowledge of current CA labor laws and codes

Physical Demands & Work Environment

  • Ability to work a flexible schedule to meet the needs of the business, including early mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds and stand for 4 hours
  • Ability to maneuver effectively around the café, office, and up/downstairs
