MERS is Hiring a Legal Intern (Hybrid) Near Lansing, MI

MUST BE AVAILABLE TO WORK 15-20 HOURS A WEEK AND IN OFFICE ON WEDNESDAYS. A WRITING SAMPLE IS REQUIRED WITH RESUME SUBMISSION. POSITION WILL START ON SEPTEMBER 13, 2024.
Summary:

This position provides legal research, writing and other support to the Legal Department. This position receives and performs various assignments upon direct assignment from the General Counsel (GC), Senior Attorney (SA), Deputy General Counsel (DGC) and Assistant General Counsel (AGC). Such assignments include research of legal questions, preparation of memoranda of law and legal documents, assessment of MERS procedures, legal document processing, and any other support activities requested or required by the MERS Legal Department.
Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Research questions of law thoroughly and in a timely manner, and prepare memorandum of law in response, with full citations and supporting information.
  • Assist in the administrative appeals and litigation processes under the direction of the GC and AGC.
  • Support and assist as directed in responding to Requests for Legal Review and legal department workflows.
  • Develop working knowledge of legal department processes and offer suggestions for improvements and/or additions.
  • Attend such MERS meetings to observe activities and provide any support or assistance required by the Legal Department.
  • Assess MERS policies and procedures to ensure compliance and make recommendations, when needed, under the direction of the GC, SA and DGC.
  • Develop working knowledge of MERS policies and procedures, and applicable laws and regulations.
  • Monitor legislative and judicial developments that may have an impact on MERS and report any findings.
  • Organize important MERS legal documents for easy access by the Legal staff.
Education:
  • Bachelor's degree required.
  • Completion within the last year of at least one year of study at an ABA accredited law school required.
  • Successful completion of a course in legal research and writing required.
  • The individual in this position must maintain good academic standing while in law school.
Knowledge of:
  • General office procedures.
Skill in:
  • Electronic and library legal research (Lexis).
  • Necessary computer applications.
  • Written and verbal communication skills.
Ability to:
  • Maintain a high degree of confidentiality.
  • Understand complex instructions and to work independently and with team members to ensure that all projects continue to progress.
