SirenOpt is Hiring a Director of Engineering Near Oakland, CA

Job Description:

SirenOpt makes a real-time micro- and nano-materials metrology sensor that is enabled by cold atmospheric plasmas. The sensor is compact, can be integrated within existing manufacturing lines, and can collect multiple material property measurements (such as thickness, density, resistivity, contaminate identification, chemical composition) in parallel and in real-time, thus allowing for the collection of critical manufacturing data that is otherwise unobtainable. SirenOpt is currently applying the sensing framework to industrial materials manufacturing processes such as Lithium-ion batteries semiconductors, membranes, and packaging/barrier coatings, where this flexible framework can be used to accelerate R&D and process optimization, improve quality control, and enable real-time process control.

SirenOpt is seeking an experienced Director of Engineering to lead the development and implementation of advanced engineering solutions for a high-performance real-time metrology platform that incorporates advanced cold atmospheric plasma, optical, thermal, mechanical, and electrical systems. The successful candidate will manage complex projects, coordinate with multidisciplinary teams, and provide technical expertise to drive innovation and ensure product excellence.

This role offers an exciting opportunity to be at the forefront of technological innovation, working with cutting-edge systems in a collaborative and dynamic environment. If you are a driven and skilled engineer looking to make a significant impact in the metrology industry, we encourage you to apply.

Key Responsibilities

Technical Leadership

o Lead and manage a team of engineers in the design, development, and implementation of cold atmospheric plasma, optical, thermal, mechanical, and (high voltage) electrical systems.

o Develop and implement concepts for addressing significantly complex product issues and engineering solutions.

o Act as a technical expert, providing in-depth and broad expertise in electrical engineering and cross-functional knowledge.

o Spearhead research and development of new technologies and product improvements.

Project Management

o Identify the scope, constraints, and risks for design, fabrication, testing, and volume production of advanced optical and electrical components.

o Use project management skills to lead subsystem and optical assembly projects, planning, scheduling, monitoring, and executing projects to meet success criteria.

o Develop project strategies and timelines, ensuring cross-functional team collaboration and coordination with suppliers.

o Lead projects with notable risk and complexity, developing strategies for project execution.

o Plan, schedule, monitor, and execute projects by leading cross-functional teams to meet success criteria.

o Coordinate and lead advanced hardware development teams, track progress, and lead projects to success.

Engineering Design and Analysis

o Generate product specifications and specify the development or modification of engineering assemblies, layouts, schematics, and detailed drawings of significant complexity.

o Define, coordinate, perform, and document engineering tests to validate system performance and reliability.

o Develop and maintain error budgets, derive design specifications for subsystems, modules, and components, and validate through system alpha testing.

o Specify and perform engineering analysis and design modifications to improve system performance.

o Support escalations pertaining to manufacturing of optical modules and failure analysis of field return modules.

Problem Solving and Troubleshooting

o Identify, troubleshoot, and solve a wide range of complex engineering problems, providing innovative solutions with broad business impact.

o Perform root cause analysis and develop solutions to technical problems in manufacturing and field operations.

o Implement new or improved system diagnostics and calibrations, validating through rigorous testing.

o Troubleshoot and root cause complex system-level issues in manufacturing and field.

Interfacing with Stakeholders

o Interface with internal and external customers to address complex electrical and firmware issues and high-value problems across a range of products.

o Communicate complex ideas, anticipate potential objections, and persuade senior-level stakeholders to adopt innovative solutions.

o Collaborate and communicate with suppliers during the design of critical optical sub-assemblies and system components.

Innovation and Development

o Lead complex experiments to validate system performance, assess and mitigate risks, and contribute to the development of next-generation products.

o Execute system-level experiments for concept and feasibility testing of key hardware and software features.

o Perform and document engineering tests and maintain optical metrology hardware and software for automated measurements.

o Support escalations from beta site teams and provide system-related training and documentation to manufacturing and field team

Qualifications

o Education: B.S./M.S./PhD in Electrical Engineering, Physics, Optics, or Related Field

Experience

o 10 years of experience in metrology, advanced sensing, plasma, electrical and/or optical systems engineering. Past example experiences may include: advanced visual inspection systems, electron optics, SEM, lasers, LiDAR, medical devices, optical modeling and simulation, etc.

o Proven leadership and project management experience with a track record of managing complex engineering projects, especially managing multiple projects simultaneously to drive parallel progress.

o Hands-on experience with designing, assembling, calibrating, and using complex opto-mechanical systems, including design for reliability, manufacturing, and service (DFx).

o Strong experience in developing and optimizing embedded controls and subsystems, including FPGA design, VHDL, firmware optimization, signal/image processing, real-time data processing, and proficiency in C and C .

o Experience with designing and executing test plans and feasibility studies, including sensitivity analyses, and using the results of those analyses to inform future product designs e.g., quantifying a prototype’s sensitivity to certain environmental disturbances and creating a mechanical design that mitigates the effects of those disturbances

o Prior exposure to high-precision, high-throughput industrial designs for material handling, metrology, process automation, and/or industrial software automation applications is a plus, especially in the context of high-volume manufacturing environments

o Experience bringing products through CE, UL, and/or FCC certification.

o Experience with high voltage systems

o Experience with maintaining awareness of customer needs and iterating on designs accordingly

o Proficiency with use of CAD and PDM tools (e.g., Solidworks, Windchill, OrCAD, Altium) to design parts and assemblies and prepare technical documentation.

o Ability to independently identify and procure parts, manage supplier relationships, and rapidly fabricate medium-fidelity prototypes using 3D printers, metal stock, optical breadboards, etc.

o Demonstrated the ability to adapt to new technical challenges and excited to work in a fast-paced, multi-disciplinary environment

o Excellent written and verbal communication skills

o Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills, including experience with debugging intertwining software, firmware, and hardware issues

Additional Information:

o Full-time position with 10% travel

o Not eligible for relocation.

o Base Salary Range: $180,000 - $240,000 USD

Other Compensation: Equity (Stock-Options) Quarterly Performance-based bonuses (Equity Cash)
