Position Summary

The Opportunity: Skagit Valley College (SVC) is seeking qualified equity-minded applicants for a full-time, tenure-track Nursing Assistant Certification (NAC) position and Director of NAC program. The successful candidate will demonstrate exceptional teaching skills including those needed to effectively teach in an online or hybrid environment, enthusiasm for the subject matter, an inclusive and equity-driven approach to teaching and learning, and innovative pedagogy and teaching strategies. Candidates should be able and excited to teach a variety of lecture and laboratory-based coursework in the Nursing Department. Faculty at SVC respect and work effectively with diverse students, colleagues, staff, and others in a campus climate that promotes innovative and equity-minded teaching, a diverse learning environment, and a strong focus on improving student success rates and addressing systemic inequities in access and achievement for all students.
You will provide classroom and practical instruction in Nursing, including the use of a high-tech skills laboratory. You will have the opportunity to take part in hands-on instruction that will position students to excel in the fast-growing Nursing health occupation. SVC Nursing Faculty typically teach an equivalent of 15- 18 instructional units per quarter (3 classes) and College service. This position is expected to begin in Fall Quarter, September 2024 .

This position is based primarily at the Mount Vernon Campus; however, Instructors may be called upon to teach at the Whidbey Island Campus located in Oak Harbor.

Duties and Responsibilities

Nursing instruction responsibilities
  • Use inclusive and effective teaching methods to support and to enhance learning for students inside and outside of the classroom;
  • Provide high-quality classroom instruction for courses in the NAC Program;
  • Deliver culturally appropriate curriculum that reflects diversity of student experience;
  • Create and facilitate contextualized and integrated learning experiences in Nursing in relation to identified college pathways that are linked to career goals;
  • Apply multiple teaching and learning strategies that promote the affective, cognitive and kinesthetic domains of learning;
  • Evaluate student learning in applicable settings such as lab, clinical and didactic;
  • Conduct ongoing development, assessment, and revision of curriculum that is responsive to local industry needs, reflects innovative pedagogy, and incorporates advances in the field of Nursing;
Student engagement and learning
  • Create a positive learning environment for students using diverse teaching methods to support and enhance student success;
  • Express appropriate awareness of the history of underrepresented groups and promote an equitable work and learning environment;
  • Demonstrate multicultural understanding and foster equity;
  • Advise students and serve as a resource for faculty colleagues and staff.
Program duties
  • Create authentic assessments of students' knowledge, skills, and abilities in Nursing that measure course, program, and college wide outcomes;
  • Work with program advisory committee members and local employers to facilitate co-op placements and job opportunities for students enrolled in the program;
  • Assist in marketing the program and participate in student recruitment activities.
Other duties
  • Assure provision of safe, quality nursing care by students per established standards of care and agency policies and procedures;
  • Engage in scholarly activities that complement and inform teaching;
  • Collaborate with faculty from other fields to develop and to provide integrative learning experiences;
  • As assigned by the Dean of Nursing.
Faculty Responsibilities
  • Incorporate an equity-minded approach to teaching and learning;
  • Conduct ongoing development, assessment, and revision of curriculum that reflects innovative and inclusive pedagogy and advances in Nursing;
  • Work collaboratively with SVC faculty from other fields to develop appropriate curricula that reflect the diversity of student experience;
  • Create a positive learning environment for students using diverse teaching methods to support and enhance student success;
  • Collaborate with other disciplines to increase enrollment and support student retention in the program with a focus on ameliorating equity gaps;
  • Develop, monitor, and assess student learning outcomes and fully participate in the college's program review process;
  • Develop, assess, and analyze program outcomes for the purpose of program improvement and enhanced student learning;
  • Conduct program outreach by leading program briefing sessions for prospective students, assisting with marketing and recruitment activities and leading student application reviews;
  • Collaborate, facilitate, and participate in advisory board meetings;
  • Participate in unit, department and other College activities, including College governance;
  • Teach online, hybrid, or classroom-based classes as required;
  • Work collaboratively as part of theNursing department team;

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor degree with a major in nursing or a baccalaureate degree in nursing with graduate degree work is in a related field, from an accredited college or university;
  • Active, unencumbered license to practice as a Registered Nurse or Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) in Washington State, or eligible for licensure in Washington State;
  • One (1) year of experience during the previous three (3) years caring for the elderly and/or chronically ill of any age; OR completion of, or ability to complete by the time of hire, a course in Adult Instruction.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Professional experience in the field;
  • Master's degree or higher in Nursing;
  • Experience training or teaching adults;
  • Experience as a mentor, preceptor, clinical instructor, adjunct faculty, or other responsibility role with pre-certification nursing assistants, pre-licensure nursing students and/or new graduate nurses;
  • Experience working within NAC training programs;
  • Experience teaching online using an industry-standard LMS such as Canvas;
  • Experience teaching any courses offered within the Nursing department;
  • Teaching experience in a higher education setting;
  • Fluency in written and spoken Spanish and English.
Salary, Benefits, Conditions of Employment, Application Procedure

Salary and Benefits:
  • Initial base annual salary placement for 2024-2025 ranges from $72,818 - $97,091 plus an additional $25,000 nursing stipend, for a standard 172-day contract (stipend is incorporated in the salary range maximum within the posting for the purposes of demonstrating the potential salary). This stipend is contingent upon the continuation of the HB2158 legislative funding and the amount dispersed to the college by the State Board. The College has a negotiated faculty wage scale in which placement on the salary structure is in accordance with the SVC Federation of Teachers Collective Bargaining Agreement.
  • A standard 172-day contract is written annually for the period of September to June. Late contracts will be prorated on the basis of work days remaining in the contract year.
  • This position is exempt from the overtime pay requirements of The Fair Labor Standards Act.
  • This is a union-represented position subject to a Collective Bargaining Agreement. The College has a negotiated faculty wage scale in which placement on the salary structure is in accordance with the SVC Federation of Teachers Collective Bargaining Agreement.
