Education and Training Requirement: High school diploma or equivalent required, Associate's degree in CNC programming, a computer-related field or a mechanical field. Experience with programming and knowledge of electronics and machine tools is required. Computer skills and software knowledge of AutoCAD, Router Cim, Microsoft Excel, Outlook and Word required. Must be able to read and interpret work orders and blueprints.
Scope: The CNC Programmer develops numerically controlled machine programs with the help of AutoCAD software. Must read and interpret blueprints and specifications to accurately program machinery. Must be proficient in G & M code, and program machinery in the most expedient, efficient and quality manner, and update programs as needed.
Duties:
Writes programs and modifies existing ones for increased efficiency.
Reviews 3D CAD design blueprints.
Makes calculations for programming including where materials should be cut.
Translates instructions into a computer automated manufacturing (CAM) program.
Communicates with engineers and staff who will use the programs.
Checks completed programs by running simulations or tests.
Determines sequence of operations in a program.
Chooses cutting tools that will be needed.
Analyzes job order and performs necessary calculations.
Analyzes and selects speeds and cutting tools for programs.
Responsible for tooling purchases and maintaining stock of correct tooling including sharpening and or maintenance.
Makes improvements to set up times for a task and contouring of complex shapes.
Simplifies tooling time for workers and increases productivity.
Monitors all programs to make sure they follow blueprint instructions and safely and successfully complete the task.
Complies with all safety rules and regulations.
Program for multiple shift organization.
Communicates with employees at all levels to ensure the highest quality product is produced within the production goal set.
May need to work extended/flexible hours to meet critical programing needs.
Follows the rules and established written policies.
Assist in training of machine operators.
Enforces safety policies and procedures.
Attends meetings and offers input and solutions on CNC production related issues.
Operates machinery as required by the CNC supervisor. And or when programing load is low.
Prepares reports and records as necessary to document departmental activities and/or provide information to other management personnel.
Other departmental interactions.
Other related duties as may be assigned.
Physical Requirements: CNC Programmers are required to spend time in a climate controlled office environment in front of a computer screen keyboarding and manipulation a mouse. From time to time they might walk and stand if operating a machine. Must be able to lift 50 lbs, bend, push and pull up to 50 lbs. occasionally.
