SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory is one of 17 Department of Energy (DOE) National Laboratories. Researchers from SLAC and other premier institutions around the world use our facilities to investigate some of the most exciting and important problems facing our society in areas such as clean energy, environmental science, biomedicine, and advanced materials.

POSITION OVERVIEW:

SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory seeks a talented Motion Controls Science and Engineering Associate to support the Electronics Engineering Division (EED) in the Accelerator Directorate. The EED is responsible for electronics subsystems for all accelerators and many test facilities throughout SLAC. The successful candidate will bring to the division a diversity of skills relevant to Motion control and robotic engineering in support of the world’s most powerful free electron laser.

Opportunities for this position include the development of controls applications using state of the art motion control systems and supporting a wide range of technical equipment. The successful candidate will help document, deploy, commission, and support robust, production level control solutions and software applications for a range of accelerator motion control systems. As well as respond to and follow through with solutions for issues encountered with operating subsystems.

Given the nature of this position, SLAC will require onsite work.

Your specific responsibilities include:

  • Support the lead engineer in the technical design, fabrication, installation, and testing of motion control systems.
  • Contribute to Rapid Response Teams by identifying and quickly resolving diverse technical issues that may arise within the Accelerator Directorate and EED.
  • Participate in the development, integration, and the operational support for various accelerator motion control subsystems implemented with a broad variety of controllers and software.
  • Direct the work of technicians and junior associates for motion control systems.
  • Maintain documentation and records for procedures, materials, and tools necessary for installation tasks. Coordinate the purchase of tools and equipment necessary to complete the installation tasks.
  • Inspect and validate project plans including field installations. Manage, monitor, and oversee project execution. Document and report the project progress.
  • Configuration control and documentation of control system hardware and software.
  • Liaise between researchers, students, technical staff, scientists, vendors, and other laboratory staff. Ensure critical engineering decisions are communicated through appropriate channels and followed through by all support groups.
  • Troubleshoot electrical issues.
  • Startup of control systems.

Note: This is a 24-month fixed term position with the possibility of extension or conversion to regular continuing position contingent on project fundings.

To be successful in this position you will bring:

  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, computer science, computer engineering, physics or related field with three years relevant hands-on experience in industrial and motion control systems, embedded software, and electrical troubleshooting; or a combination of education and relevant experience.
  • Ability to quickly learn and adapt to new technologies and programming tools.
  • Strong problem-solving skills, independent decision making, and ability to work in a team environment.
  • Experience authoring technical documentation, specifications, schematics and wiring diagrams.
  • Experience fabricating, assembling, and troubleshooting low voltage industrial control chassis and cables.
  • Demonstrated safety-oriented behavior.

The expected pay range for this position is $104,000 to $140,000 per annum. SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory/Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for a position. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location and external market pay for comparable jobs.
