Description

Slipstream creates, tests, implements, and scales the next generation of solutions that move us farther, faster toward a clean energy economy. You are the key to the success of our organization by demonstrating our values, engaging in our mission, and creating results that will produce enduring economic and environmental benefits for all.

We partner with governments, philanthropies, and utilities to discover, test, and scale new solutions that save - and decarbonize - energy. We collaborate with communities of color, rural communities, and Tribal Nations to address historic inequities in the health and economic benefits of clean energy. We're optimistic, ambitious about our impact, and on a journey to become increasingly inclusive and equitable in our work.

The Senior Researcher on Energy Equity will play a crucial role within Slipstream's Research and Innovation Department, conducting applied research focused on energy and climate justice with a strong emphasis on equity. Our research is increasingly focused on this critical and challenging dimension of decarbonizing our communities. This position requires a comprehensive understanding of energy and climate equity issues, and expertise in mixed methods research and experimental design. You will lead and design impactful equity-focused research projects. You will explore disparities in affordability, decarbonization efforts, consumption, and resilience. Additionally, you will support existing decarbonization innovation objectives by providing insights and approaches to enhance equity in research and other outcomes. The ideal candidate will possess a natural curiosity to learn, work independently or within diverse teams, and engage with the communities we are supporting.

What you’ll do:

  • Design, collaborate on, and lead applied research projects broadly focused on energy and climate justice, with equity considerations at the forefront of the research.
  • Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders, including community organizations and members, policymakers, and other researchers, to ensure research is relevant and impactful.
  • Support existing energy and decarbonization research projects by providing insights and approaches that center equity in our research.
  • Mentor and guide junior researchers and interns, fostering a collaborative and inclusive research environment.
  • Prioritize and execute partnership activities to advance strategies; secure external funding to advance strategies.
  • Communicate research findings through reports, publications, presentations, and other mediums to a diverse range of audiences.
  • Collect, analyze, and interpret data to generate actionable insights that inform policy, programs, and practices aimed at achieving energy and climate equity.

Qualifications

What you’ll need:

  • Natural curiosity and interest in learning about new approaches to equitable decarbonization
  • Experience working with community organizations and other related stakeholders, including disadvantaged communities
  • Proficiency in mixed methods research, analysis, and other approaches for conducting social science research
  • Demonstrated experience in designing and leading applied research projects, particularly those focused on equity
  • Strong understanding of climate change issues and their intersection with energy equity principles
  • Excellent analytical, writing, and communication skills

We’d like it if you had familiarity with these too, but if not here’s what you’ll learn:

  • Thorough understanding of the energy industry and energy analytics, particularly with respect to the built environment
  • Experience collaborating and engaging with other stakeholders including policymakers, advocates, utilities, and technologists
  • Carbon and greenhouse gas inventory protocols including life cycle assessment and environmental product declarations
  • Knowledge of policies and protocols guiding energy justice (e.g. UN Sustainable Development Goals or the Energy Equity Project)

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or advanced degree in social science or adjacent field with relevant experience, or equivalent work experience
  • 5 years relevant work experience
