We currently have an exciting opportunity in our Engineering department for an NPD Automation Engineer II at our Devens, MA location. 

An NPD Automation Engineer 2 is responsible for the development of assigned projects via design, fabrication, assembly, and implementation in new or existing product lines. Additionally, an NPD Automation Engineer 2 is responsible for assisting with the launch of new automated lines into production and supporting the new and existing product lines as a subject matter expert as needed. 

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for the design, fabrication, assembly, and testing of basic automated systems, EOATs, fixtures, molding cage systems, and custom guards. 
  • Develop proper documentation for manufactured projects (bill of materials, spares, required preventative maintenance)
  • Support and evaluate manufacturing methods / equipment to maintain state-of-the-art systems and provide solutions for problems that adversely affect costs, operator safety, productivity and quality.
  • Regular attendance and professionalism.
  • Abide by all applicable SMC procedures and guidelines.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Essential Qualifications:

  • A two-year post high school diploma / certificate in a related field or technical trade and 3 years of experience; OR 5 years of demonstrated work experience in a relevant field.
  • SolidWorks design experience and ability to work from 2D prints and CAD details and review 3D solid models.
  • Working experience with machine shop equipment (i.e. CNC/manual mills, lathes, general power tools)
  • Working knowledge of power/hand tools, measurement devices and multimeters.
  • Proficient PC skills in a Windows-based environment, capable of utilizing multiple Windows applications (Excel, Word, Outlook)
  • Understanding in reading electrical and pneumatic schematics. 
  • Working knowledge of DC and/or principals of electricity.
  • Knowledgeable of relay functionality.
  • Knowledgeable of basic level PLC programs. 
  • Demonstrated problem solving skills.
  • Strong interpersonal, leadership and communication skills.
  • Strong Team Player, ability to be self-starting.
  • Demonstrated effective interpersonal, collaborative, and communication skills.

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Robotic programming experience.
  • Experience with vision systems.
  • Understanding of electrical wiring and panel building.

ADA Requirements:

  • Stand, walk, bend, squat, twist, reach or otherwise move frequently
  • Occasional repetitive motion and grasping
  • Occasional climbing to reach areas on machines or racks
  • Lift, move or otherwise transfer up to 50 lbs. occasionally, >20 lbs. frequently
  • Typically sits, grasps items or performs keyboarding for occasional operation of a computer
  • Exposure to typical machine shop physical hazards which may require respiratory protection
