Reports to: Chief Development Officer

Summary/Objective:

Smile Train seeks a collaborative, innovative, and entrepreneurial Development professional to serve as Vice President, Development to drive the organization's fundraising efforts. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute significantly to the organization's growth by leading in developing, implementing, and managing a development plan to achieve and exceed revenue of $25 million, supporting the financial goals of Smile Train to meet its long-term vision. Supervisory Responsibilities:

The Vice President, Development will report to the Chief Development Officer. They will be based in Smile Train's New York headquarters and oversee a team of approximately 11 people across the

United States.

The Vice President, Development will be expected to contribute broadly to all aspects of the fulfillment of the organization's vision and goals. The candidate will be an experienced development professional with a demonstrated track record to respond effectively to the following challenges:

  • Create, update, and implement a multi-year fundraising plan with clear annual and long-term revenue targets to achieve increased philanthropic revenue;
  • Lead the Development of the department's annual budget and goal setting with direct reports, demonstrate accountability, and be solutions-focused to deliver growth;
  • Critically monitor progress against the plan, evaluate key KPIs, make data-driven decisions, and implement necessary adaptations to drive improved results and ensure revenue targets are achieved;
  • Establish and execute regular reporting and analysis of fundraising performance, including supporting and equipping staff with decision-making tools to drive fundraising success;
  • Create reporting to track the department's overall performance and report regularly to the executive team on the progress;
  • Manage, coach, and develop high-caliber staff with a focus on collaboration, accountability, and efficiency to ensure individual and team goals are achieved and efforts are focused to drive higher performance;
  • Identify, cultivate, and generate funding from a personal donor portfolio and steward meaningful relationships with current and prospective donors through all aspects of the giving cycle;
  • Ensure prospect identification, research, and assignment provide a continuous pipeline of individuals with leadership-giving capacity and inclination;
  • Execute a comprehensive moves management and metrics strategy for all portfolio-managed donors to continually grow to fund annually;
  • Ensure sustainable and increased legacy support through effective planned giving portfolio management, including planned giving donor identification, qualification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship, legacy marketing efforts, and planned giving program administration.
  • Serve as a leader in partnership with programs and finance teams to build and optimize processes and systems for grant deliverables to various stakeholders.
  • Establish, communicate, and maintain departmental policies and procedures related to the Development of fundraising program responsibilities.
  • Lead the team in cross-functional collaboration to develop and implement successful engagement and communications strategies tailored to high-value donors.
  • Liaise with the Database team to ensure that the CRM (Salesforce) is utilized to support Development functions, including but not limited to moves management, performance analytics, tracking all donor and prospect activities, prospect research, wealth screening, and data appends;

Travel: Travel is required for this position and is expected up to 25-50%

Required education and experience:

  • A bachelor's degree is required, and I have 9 years of experience in progressively responsible positions in development fundraising.
  • Demonstrated track record of building comprehensive development programs resulting in a significant increase in philanthropic revenue;
  • Proven ability to identify, cultivate, and solicit a pipeline of high-value prospects with a track record of securing six and 7-figure gifts;
  • Demonstrated skills in building relationships with major, principal, and planned giving donors;
  • Prior experience soliciting and securing planned gifts and planned giving program management preferred;
  • Proven ability to drive results, consistently achieving targets even during challenging circumstances;
  • Financial acumen with a disciplined professional approach to managing staff and budget;
  • Excellent people and project management skills and facility for motivating and helping to manage cross-functional teams;
  • Strength in analytics and metrics and monitoring performance with a data-driven approach;
  • Demonstrable organizational, professional, and problem-solving skills and ability to facilitate collaboration across multiple teams;
  • Experience building, developing, and leading a team of high-performing fundraising professionals;
  • Excellence in engaging with donors and representing an organization externally;
  • Innovative and critical thinker with proficiency in translating data, analytics, and strategic thinking into action plans and results;
  • Excellent presentation and communication skills, both written and oral;
  • Superlative interpersonal skills combined with self-confidence, gravitas, and the ability to manage organizational change;
  • Knowledge of Salesforce (preferred) or other CRM/donor database systems, email/online engagement tools, online research tools, and Microsoft Office;
