Overall accountabilities are defined in this section.The Private Fleet team is looking for motivated professionals to facilitate the distribution of our great products to customers and consumers. These personnel can analyze production metrics against market needs in Supply & Demand Planning, focus on product transportation through Logistics, or ensure the shelves of your local grocery store are stocked by Direct Store Delivery.
The Fleet Operations Supervisor is directly responsible for centralized planning in order to streamline load efficiencies for the operations with general oversight of the Transportation Private Fleet Staff. The primary focus is to ensure consistent, efficient, reliable, and timely service levels to internal and external customers by managing multiple factors to include vehicle availability, driver skills, customer demand, traffic conditions, fuel costs, and regulatory compliance. This position will also bridge the communication link between drivers, Smithfield facilities and corporate team members. It also includes problem resolution in support of providing excellent service to Smithfield production plants, distribution centers and customers.
Core Responsibilities
  • Primary focus is maximizing productivity, reducing costs, and ensuring the accurate and timely delivery of full truckload service shipments through centralized planning and logistics.
  • Analyze and evaluate fleet operations networks for adjustments and cost savings opportunities.
  • Coordinate and develop routes and schedules.
  • Manage the dispatch process based on the required deliveries/shipment schedule; ensure efficient transportation planning and scheduling of drivers and deliveries to maximize resources, reduce miles and ensure efficient utilization of equipment and drivers within the assigned location(s).
  • Develop and maintain an effective working relationship with Transportation, DC/Plant management, Customer Service, Supply and Demand Planning; work with various contacts as necessary on schedules, changes to pick-up or delivery schedules or any transportation related issues/concerns.
  • Oversee the analysis of transportation activities; recommend and/or implement changes based on the results of such analysis.
  • Develop and maintain on-going reporting to track transportation activities and expenses to include, but not limited to, cost per mile, operating ratio, driver/truck utilization and availability, as well as delivery performance (accuracy, timeliness and customer satisfaction)
  • Develop, maintain and update policies, procedures and processes to improve operational efficiency and ensure regulatory compliance.
  • Other duties as assigned including proactively assisting others in achieving the organization’s objectives.

  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited four-year college or university and 2 years’ relevant experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience, required.
  • Experience acting as a lead by providing training, coaching, or mentoring to less experienced staff or through managing a process or project.
  • 2 years of operational experience in driver management, planning and an understating of DOT regulations.
  • Understanding State and Federal regulations preferred.
  • Have basic competency with Microsoft Office programs (Excel, Outlook, Word).
  • Ability to work effectively and demonstrate strong interpersonal skills in a cross-functional environment with both internal and external team members.
  • Ability to work well with others in fast paced, dynamic environment.
  • Ability to be respectful, approachable and team oriented while building strong working relationships and a positive work environment.
  • Must be available to address any Private Fleet related issues as they arise.
  • Will be required to travel up to 5%.
Supervisory Responsibilities
  • Train, assign, direct, supervise, and evaluate the transportation team members.
  • Collaborates with Safety department to ensure compliance with all policies and are coached effectively to meet organizational company standards.
  • Conduct morning meetings with Fleet Dispatchers.
