This position is responsible for ensuring the proper operation of the wastewater pretreatment facility and compliance with the facility wastewater discharge permit. The supervisor is responsible for routine operational decisions and will coordinate the tasks among the operators and technicians. This employee must work closely and effectively with all waste water operators, technicians, managers, and the local municipal regulatory employees. Core Responsibilities 50% Wastewater Operations Monitor and control all wastewater operations to produce the best quality of final effluent possible to meet all regulatory permit requirements. Ensure that operations of the wastewater treatment area meet existing Smithfield permits and plan requirements (i.e., spill control plans, storm water permit). Minimize wastewater treatment system upsets by becoming familiar with and by monitoring system performance on a regular basis. Reduce the electrical, mechanical, and chemical operating costs. Ensure all equipment is maintained and in good operating condition. Establish and maintain effective communication with the Municipal Utilities wastewater treatment plant personnel. Maintain inventory of all supplies and chemicals needed to operate the wastewater system, and manage byproducts and wastes to minimize spills and reportable releases. Monitor sludge land application requirements, application rates and outside contractor job performance of application. 40% Laboratory Analysis and Sampling Ensure that all required sampling and testing are completed as assigned, and filed according to the plant’s Environmental Management System document control requirements. This includes daily sampling and on site analysis, as well as sample collection and packaging for offsite analysis. Accurate Chain of Custody documentation and lab invoice approval is also required. All lab equipment must be maintained and properly calibrated. Timeliness of sampling operations is critical. 10% Management and Other Duties Assist the Plant Environment Manager with other duties as directed. Manage a team of wastewater operators and technicians. The above statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by people assigned to this job. Qualifications To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science or related field from an accredited four-year college or university and 2 years of progressive experience in environmental or related field; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience in a position of leadership to include team development and management, required. Grade I Wastewater Certification (or able to acquire within 18 months of employment). Candidate must pass the Smithfield online wastewater courses and the Pure Safety environmental classes within three (3) months of employment. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one small group situations to regulatory representatives, and to other employees of the organization. Ability to troubleshoot wastewater operations, both chemical and physical, and make recommendations for improvement. Basic understanding of wastewater chemistry (BOD, solids, pH, metals). Perform math required for wastewater calculations (basic functions and simple algebraic equations, parts per million conversion to pounds). Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagram form. Knowledge of Window applications including Microsoft Excel spreadsheet software and Word Processing software, email. Flexible shifts Must be available for night and weekend on-call status. Prior experience operating Dissolved Air Flotation (DAF) units, anaerobic lagoons, biotowers, and clarifiers is preferred. Prior meat and food processing wastewater treatment experience is preferred. Ability to work well with others in fast paced, dynamic environment. Ability to be respectful, approachable and team oriented while building strong working relationships and a positive work environment. Supervisory Responsibilities This position is responsible for supervising three or more Wastewater Operators and a Wastewater Technician if there is one located at the facility. Plant environment will include wet or humid conditions (non-weather related), extreme cold and heat (non-weather related), working near moving mechanical parts, exposure to fumes or airborne particles, and chemicals. Noise level in the work environment is usually loud when in the production area. Occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision includes close vision, distance vision, and ability to adjust focus. Frequently required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl and talk or hear.
