SUMMARY

A Water Maintenance Technician is a skilled/journey level class in the Public Works Water Distribution, Treatment and Maintenance Mechanical series. General operation and maintenance of Domestic/Irrigation Water Systems. Performs a variety of advanced and routine predictive, preventive, and/or reactive skilled duties in the construction, installation, maintenance and repair of water facilities. Monitors, operates and maintains the automatic chlorinators and performs water quality sampling to ensure safe, clean potable water for the community. Maintains and updates records of production work performed in the field. 

This position requires a motivated field maintenance technician to have a working knowledge of proper water works plumbing methods and techniques; cuts, fits, welds, lays and repairs water mains; cleans and flushes water mains, valves, and hydrants. Working knowledge of light and some heavy equipment operating principles, practices and procedures. Must be available to respond to emergency “call outs” at any time of day, year-round, regardless of weather conditions. A large percentage of the position is fieldwork.

DUTIES AND RESPONISBILITIES

Although other duties may be assigned, the essential duties include the following: 

  • To ensure safe and quality drinking water supply to all customers.
  • To provide adequate amounts of water, under pressure sufficient to meet all demands.
  • To participate in all aspects of the operation and maintenance of Soboba’s domestic water system as well as portions of Soboba’s agricultural and industrial water systems.
  • Install, repair and maintain water lines; disconnect service lines; install and remove fire hydrants; lay underground pipe; cutting & welding of steel pipe; install and repairs valves. Maintain and repair of sewer/leach lines is preferred.
  • Operate SCADA Systems.
  • Utility line locating experience
  • Ability to operate and maintain valves, pumps, wells, hydrants, booster stations, reservoirs and related equipment.
  • Skillfully and safely operate heavy equipment such as backhoe, skip loader and vactor truck when required in the course of performing work duties.
  • Daily monitoring of the chemical feed pumps, solutions barrels and feed system in general will be mandatory. 

  EDUCATION

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent 
  • Knowledge of turbines, pumps, valves, pipes, electrical system and basic water hydraulics
  • Knowledge of mathematical principles related to computation of flows and volumes in water storage and distribution systems
  • Knowledge of Federal Drinking Water Laws, Regulations and Ordinances applicable to water distribution systems and safe work practices related to water production and maintenance work. 

EXPERIENCE

  • At least four (2) years’ experience in the installation, maintenance, and repair of water facilities or similar industrial mechanical maintenance repair experience.
  • Experience in the installation, maintenance, and repair of pumping equipment, including valves, pumps, pipeline repairs, sewer/leach line maintenance and marking of new waterline services.
  • Experience in carrying out all maintenance requirements per manufacturers specifications and requirements concerning the wells, pumps, controls, flow meters, etc.
  • Troubleshoots and addresses water related complaints. 

QUALIFICATIONS 

  • Team player with emphasis on safety at all times
  • Be able to attend trainings and/or meetings
  • Must be able to lift 60lbs. and meet the physical, mental and environmental demands of the position. 
  • Available to work weekends, holidays and evenings as required to accommodate the Tribe’s needs. 
  • Effectively use of computer systems, applications and GIS software relevant to work performed.
  • Knowledge of general construction 

REQUIRED 

  • A valid California Driver License
  • State of California Distribution Operators Certificate Grade II
  • State of California Water Treatment Operator Certificate Grade II
