Teaching Assistant Professor of Neuroscience - Departments of Biology and Psychology- 24368

Description
The Eberly College of Arts and Sciences at West Virginia University invites applications for a Teaching Assistant Professor to support our rapidly growing undergraduate program in Neuroscience. This is a 9-month, full-time, benefits-eligible position with an expected start date of August 1, 2024. Teaching Assistant Professor appointments have renewable terms of up to three years, with no limit on the number of terms. Teaching Assistant Professors are eligible for promotion, e.g., to Teaching Associate Professor and Teaching Professor; however, promotion to senior ranks is not a requirement for institutional commitment and career stability. The rapidly growing undergraduate Neuroscience Program is an interdisciplinary program shared between the Departments of Psychology and Biology.

The successful applicant will be appointed to either the Department of Psychology or the Department of Biology, depending on the fit with the candidate's skills and areas of expertise. The Department of Psychology has 26 full-time faculty, 70 graduate students, and 683 undergraduate psychology majors. Ph.D. training is offered in Behavior Analysis (ABAI accredited), Behavioral Neuroscience, Clinical and Clinical Child Psychology (APA accredited), and Life-Span Developmental Psychology. The Department of Biology has 31 full-time faculty, 54 graduate students, and 468 undergraduate majors. Graduate training is offered in Behavioral Neuroscience, Cell and Molecular Biology, Ecology and Evolution, and Genetics and Genomics.

Qualifications
The successful applicant must have 1) a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree in neuroscience, psychology, cellular/molecular biology, or a closely related field (e.g., behavioral pharmacology, biopsychology, genetics); 2) demonstrated excellence in teaching at the undergraduate level, including an interest in research methodologies and statistical approaches as well as a broad array of neuroscience topics; 3) excellent oral and written communication skills; 4) demonstrated evidence of, or ability related to, undergraduate mentorship and advising. ABD candidates will be considered with the expectation that the degree is earned by December 31, 2024. Duties include teaching four courses per semester and advising undergraduate neuroscience majors. Courses will likely include research methods (including statistical approaches) and foundational neuroscience courses. Additional courses will depend on the expertise of the instructor and could include 300- or 400-level courses in either the Behavioral Neuroscience or Cellular, Molecular, and Systems Neuroscience areas of emphasis. There is no traditional research assignment. Part-time summer advising is expected with additional compensation.

To apply, please upload 1) a letter of application; 2) curriculum vitae; a 1-2-page statement of teaching philosophy and interests; 3) and a list of references with complete contact information. Candidates invited for long-list interview may be asked to send more information like letters of recommendations.

The screening process will begin July 8, 2024, and continue until the position is filled.
