Job Description:
Position Summary
Provides and assists with pulmonary function laboratory services to patients as directed by physicians' orders. Independently performs job functions with patients, staff and visitors in such a manner as to build trust and confidence in his/her abilities and those of the department and Elliot Health System.
Key Responsibilities

• Facilitates communication between the pulmonary function laboratory, respiratory care, medical staff, and all other departments within the Elliot Health System.
• Demonstrates working knowledge of basic cardiopulmonary monitoring and its clinical implications.
• Demonstrates patient assessment skills (i.e., vital signs, level of consciousness, breath sounds, patient history, etc.) and implement nursing intervention as indicated.
• Administers aerosol therapy as indicated during pulmonary function testing or bronchoscopy.
• Draws and interprets arterial blood gases for all patients according to established department policy.
• Demonstrates a working knowledge of complete pulmonary function testing and methacholine challenge to include spirometry, diffusion capacity, lung volumes field walking tests and stress testing.
• Demonstrates a working knowledge of methacholine challenge testing according to established policy and procedure and understands indications and contraindications for testing.
• Assists physician in all types of bronchoscopies as per established policy and procedure.
• Ensures that all admissions and discharges to the pulmonary lab are done in accordance with established policy and procedure.
• Schedules testing and procedures performed in the pulmonary lab.
• Participates and assists in the Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program as needed.
• Ensures that the charging system accurately reflects all activity in the lab and that records are kept in accordance with established policy.
• Orders and inventories all pulmonary function lab equipment.
• Maintains, assembles, troubleshoots, disinfects, and sterilizes all pulmonary lab equipment as per manufacturer recommendations and established policy and procedure.
• Ability to operate related equipment such as: oxygen regulators, oxygen delivery equipment, bronchoscopy equipment.
• Demonstrates a working knowledge of indications, contraindications and adverse reactions of medications administered.

Education/Experience/Licensure

• Education: Graduate of an accredited school of respiratory care program is required. Must be trained and competent to perform care for pediatric, adult and geriatric patients.
• Experience: Two years of experience as a pulmonary function technologist is preferred.
• Certification/Licensure: Ability to obtain BLS certification and maintain during employment. Respiratory Care Practitioner is required. Attain and maintain a National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC) pulmonary function credential (CPFT or RPFT) is required. ACLS certification is required within 6 months of hire.
