Somerville School District is Hiring a 2024 Summer Programs - Summer Calculus Project: Director Near Somerville, MA

Job Goal:

In collaboration with The Calculus Project Organization, founded by Dr. Adrian Mims, the Somerville Calculus Project supports Black and Latiné students, as well as students of other historically and systemically excluded identities, in order to actualize SPS’ vision of closing the achievement and opportunity gap in our advanced level math classrooms. Once students are enrolled, the Calculus Project (TCP) commits to working with them through their senior year of high school. In the summer, students come together for four weeks of rigorous and engaging math experiences to pre-learn selected topics from the upcoming year and participate in team building, field trips, clubs, and other STEM experiences.

The Calculus Project seeks to provide the opportunities, support, environment, high expectations, and resources necessary for students in the program to achieve educational success, to feel valued, and contribute to their community. We are searching for a Director who can support TCP summer staff in furthering this goal.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree (Master’s Degree preferred) with experience in teaching middle or high school mathematics and/or educational administration; at least one year experience managing a program is preferred
  • Spanish, Portuguese, or Haitian Creole language proficiency is a plus
  • Ability to supervise and support a team of up to twenty staff members, including project site coordinator, learning designers, learning facilitators, and peer mentors (teen staff)
  • Ability to manage communications with and (when necessary) payment of community partners
  • Ability to provide critical feedback to staff on ways to improve classroom instruction and/or management
  • Ability to communicate with students and families who are from culturally and/or linguistically different backgrounds
  • Ability to organize and coordinate daily activities including student attendance, family communication, payroll, and other responsibilities daily
  • Ability to identify biased and hateful incidents among students and staff and appropriately respond to such incidents

Responsibilities:

  • Lead recruitment efforts to hire TCP summer staff and co-coordinate hiring process 
  • Outreach to 6-8 and SHS administrators, mathematics educators, counselors, and deans to recruit new students
  • Manage student registration process in collaboration with the summer leadership team
  • Onboard, train and supervise TCP summer staff 
  • Recruit and manage community partners and guest speakers; collect and share relevant documents with finance team to ensure timely payment
  • Co-design summer program schedule, including field trips, guest speakers, and graduation ceremony
  • Co-create and implement an attendance system
  • Build partnership with TCP families through consistent communication 
  • Informally evaluate TCP Site Coordinator
  • Act as instructional lead, conduct regular observations of classrooms, and coach TCP learning designers to make improvements in culturally proficient practices 
  • Collect informal feedback from TCP summer staff daily in order to make adjustments, as necessary
  • Report incidents to summer leadership team and other relevant staff as required; ensure that all required documents are completed as part of the reporting process
  • Respond to behavior concerns, conflicts, and crises as they arise
  • Co-plan and co-lead daily debriefs with TCP summer staff after student dismissal
  • Support in developing and facilitating Count Forward curriculum, a series of conversations, discussions and presentations meant to disrupt deficit thinking and amplify the contributions of professionals of color to the U.S. social fabric and the STEM field in particular 
  • Develop a program culture where staff monitors equity data and prioritizes root causes analyses in order to use data effectively
  • Manage data collection for program effectiveness, including student and staff surveys and pre- and post-assessments and co-prepare program reports, effectively communicate the results, both orally and in writing
  • Conduct descriptive data analysis of program impact looking at STAR Enterprise, MCAS, and pre- post-assessment results in collaboration with district data coordinator
  • Monitor program impact and outcomes; make data-based changes to the TCP program to improve student outcomes
  • Assume every TCP student and staff member has a superpower; you can help them find it 

Terms of Employment:

Seasonal/Yearly Employment

Location: East Somerville Community School

Stipend: $6,000

Mandatory Orientation and Professional Development Days: Week of June 24, 2024

Program Schedule:

July 8, 2024 – August 2, 2024

Monday through Friday 

8am-2pm, 5 days per week, Monday-Friday

Reports to: Assistant Superintendent for Academics, Manager of Programs and Partnerships, Co-Directors of Summer Programs, and TCP Director.
