The team is responsible for modeling the commerce data for Disney streaming products (Disney , ESPN , Hulu, Star ) and running transformations adapting it to a variety of formats for downstream consumers.
This is a distributed team based between Santa Monica, San Francisco and New York offices. This is a fast paced and fast growing team, where you will have influence over the technical direction of data modeling, as well as system architecture. You will also have an opportunity to learn about the international landscape and challenges in the area of billing, payments, subscriptions, offers and promotions as our business initiatives evolve around the world over the next few years.
QualificationsBasic Qualifications What you will work on
- Requires experience in Scala, ideally with knowledge of version 2.13. Scala 3 experience is not necessary.
- Experience with functional programming languages like Erlang, Haskell, or Lisp is beneficial and can be a good foundation to pick up Scala.
- Previous experience with data architecture, ETL pipelines, or data engineering is valued but not mandatory.
- Not looking for candidates with a heavy focus on large, distributed systems due to the scale of the internal tooling team's work.
- Working with advanced SQL and Postgres is an asset to the team.
- Prefers candidates near hub locations but is open to extraordinary talent regardless of location.
- Remote work is initially acceptable with possible transitions to in-office, particularly for stand-out candidates.
- Typically, the office attendance is around two days a week, with flexibility depending on circumstances.
- Must be close to a hub office since these roles may covert to FTE. They are not converting workers that are not close to a Hub office. Locations can be NYC/Santa Monica/San Fran/Seattle/Texas/Fl.

- -location: if someone a superstar, location less important. SF, NY, and Santa Monica ideal.
- -what does hybrid schedule look like if they convert? Every office a little different. SF less frequent than NY. Right now, come in 2 days/week, not sure about future. If someone is close to the office, would encourage them to come into the office when others coming in even as a contractor b/c it would benefit them, but not mandatory/hard requirement. Prefer near a hub, but depends on the candidate. If someone is perfect and non local, will look at the profile.

QualificationsBasic Qualifications What you will work on
- Create new data models and extend existing ones to support new business initiatives representing packaging, pricing and promotional aspects of various digital products we sell.
- Design solutions interconnecting existing commerce systems from various organizations, allowing for bundling of products from disparate business units.
- Create scalable backend services in Scala/JVM that support traceability of incremental data mutations and fast recovery from any undesired data state.
- Be involved in code reviews and architecture review for team members
- Participate in Agile methodology and SCRUM processes such as Sprint Planning, Backlog grooming, Daily Standups and Retrospectives with the team
- BS/MS Degree in Computer Science
- 5 years of experience in backend services development
- Proficient in designing and implementing complex data architectures and systems.
- Experience working with cloud technologies (AWS preferred).
- Knowledge of Scala/JVM based languages. Functional programming experience is a strong plus.
- In-depth experience working on relational and graph databases, mapping complex logical models into persistence layers (PostreSQL, MySQL). Familiarity with Window/Partition functions is a plus.
- Previous experience taking ownership of features/functionality and delivering projects end-to-end with high quality and robust architecture.
- Excellent communication skills and ability to work with cross functional business partners
- Ability to dive deep into any technical component as well as understand and drive the overall systems architecture.
- Previous work with distributed teams.
- Ability to quickly ramp up on new domains and technologies.
- Experience building data pipelines
- Can be remote but MUST be close to a hub office (SF/LA/Seattle/FL/Texas/NYC) in order to convert to FTE as these "may have potential to convert".
