Job Title: Transportation Dispatcher

Reports To:Transportation Supervisor
Summary: Communicate and maintain transportation information, manage queries, and facilitate the timely resolution of intraday transportation issues with schools, students, families, and staff. May transport students as necessary.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities: (Other duties may be assigned)
Supports a transportation program that provides safe and efficient delivery of students.
Performs time-sensitive dispatch function and communicates effectively and concisely with transportation employees, school-based staff, families, and students via two-way radios, phone, and e-mail.
Answers and proactively responds to the SBSD Transportation Department central phone line and email box in a timely and service-friendly manner.
Tracks and communicates awareness of city traffic changes, road closures, and weather conditions.
Gathers, analyzes, and summarizes information related to transportation complaints/public feedback and resolved public concerns with transportation services. Publishes monthly management report tracking complaints/feedback received, issue trends and issue resolution timeframes.
Collects, monitors, and archives a variety of transportation data and creates reports including, but not limited to, ridership and bus capacity information, route splitting and cancellations, student conduct reports, seating plans.
Assists Transportation Supervisor and Transportation Coordinator with administrative and other duties including, but not limited to:
Maintaining and updating the Daily Transportation Dashboard.
Maintaining a computerized database of regular school bus routing and scheduling information, identifying and recommending locations for bus stops, alternative routing, and related needs.
Coordinating special education student transportation to meet needs of the Office of Educational Support Services.
Coordinating the scheduling of vocational tech routes, non-residential routes, athletic, co-curricular, and activity trips.
Assisting in the preparation of reports and maintenance of records as required.
May perform other duties assigned by the Transportation Supervisor, including but not limited to, transporting students via van or bus and the cleaning of vehicles as required.

Qualification Requirements: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. Education and/or Experience: Associates degree or the equivalent preferred. Two (2) or more years' experience in a transportation-related field is preferred. Previous experience with transporting passengers or light truck delivery desired.
Licenses, Registrations: Valid Driver's License with no points is required. Vermont Commercial Driver's License (CDL), with Vermont School Bus Endorsement would make candidates highly competitive, but is not required (can be obtained post-employment if interested). Must be able to pass a physical, including drug test. Certification in Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI); Cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR), Automatic External Defibrillator (AED), and first aid certification required (can be obtained post-employment). Must qualify for a DOT medical card.
Language Skills: Must have outstanding written and oral communication skills, and demonstrated ability to manage and resolve sensitive service issues with the public. Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, regulations, maps, and procedure manuals.
Mathematical Skills: Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, proportions. Ability to apply concepts of basic math and algebra.
Reasoning Skills: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Demonstrated ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions to deal with problems involving variables in non-standardized situations is necessary.
Other Skills and Abilities: Personal computer and spreadsheet experience. Ability to work in a friendly manner with co-workers and students, staff and others by demonstrating patience, kindness, and courtesy. Ability to observe student behavior and advise supervisors of concerns and/or issues. Effective organization skills and the demonstrated ability to manage multiple tasks are required. Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and policies as they relate to the job responsibilities is essential. Knowledge of the roads in South Burlington, VT and communities served by the District. Must be able to keep high levels of confidentiality in all aspects of job performance.

While performing the Transportation Dispatcher duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to see, talk, and hear in a moderate to loud environment. The employee is frequently required to remain stationary, reach forward and above and occasionally move from location to location, bend, and move items. The ability to grasp documents, files and other items and to operate office machinery, computers, phones, and radios is required. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Occasionally the position requires the employee to work irregular or extended hours, and must be able to meet deadlines with severe time constraints from several people.
The employee may be required to travel to other work locations and be exposed to various weather conditions.The incumbent must meet insurability conditions for employment by the District's liability insurance carrier.
Work Environment: The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate and occasionally loud. While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works near moving mechanical buses and equipment. The employee works indoors and outside with various weather conditions, including a variance in temperatures, and will occasionally walk on slippery surfaces. The employee must be able to meet deadlines with time constraints and interact with students, staff members and members of the public.
Terms of Employment: Full Year or as specified on the Memorandum of Understanding
Evaluation: Performance will be evaluated at least annually by the Transportation Supervisor according to the stated performance objectives and the qualities and characteristics contained on the evaluation form.
