Job Responsibilities

In conjunction with highway and bridge maintenance activities, performs skilled highway maintenance worker functions and operates heavy equipment such as backhoe, excavator, motor grader, slope mower, tractor with boom mower, and tractor with boom limb cutter.

Conducts daily preventative maintenance activities on all crew equipment to ensure that equipment is greased and lubricated, proper coolant and oil (engine and hydraulic) levels are maintained, hoses and belts are inspected for deterioration, tires are properly inflated, and no leakages are present.

Conducts safety inspections on all assigned vehicles and equipment. Monitors the preventative maintenance program of equipment to ensure a routine maintenance schedule is followed and to monitor equipment use and wear to prolong equipment life.

Coordinates placement of traffic control devices to properly set up a maintenance work zone according to SCDOT Work Zone Traffic Control Manual and Field Guide.

Assists in tracking and recording daily work performed, including specific accomplishments, work locations, equipment utilized, and quantity of materials used.

Performs skilled highway maintenance worker functions and operates equipment such as boom truck, pipe truck / vacuum truck and tractor with boom limb cutter.

Assists in emergency or inclement weather operations, may include being available for extended hours or 12-hour shifts. Removes litter, debris, and dead animals from roadway and rights-of-way.

Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum and Additional Requirements

One (1) year of related work experience; or an approved acceptable equivalence. Necessary Special Requirement : A valid motor vehicle operator’s license is required.

Requires attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement in the position.

The physical demands for the essential functions involves bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, and grasping.

Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. Walking for extended periods, treading rough terrain, working in close proximity to motoring traffic, and in natural environmental hazards.

May be required to work outside normal

scheduled work week; especially during inclement weather.
