Job Title: Director of Pharmacy Operations

Location: South Central Regional Medical Center
Department: Pharmacy
Reports To: Chief Operating Officer
FLSA Status: Exempt

Position Summary:

The Director of Pharmacy Operations is responsible for overseeing inpatient, outpatient and clinic dispensing; USP adherence; DNV regulatory compliance; and automation of pharmaceutical services at South Central Regional Medical Center. This role encompasses strategic planning, operational efficiency, regulatory compliance, and team development to drive growth and enhance the overall customer experience.  The Director will lead with a focus on ensuring the delivery of safe, effective, and high-quality medication therapy to patients. The Director will collaborate with interdisciplinary teams, manage pharmacy staff, and drive initiatives that enhance patient care and optimize pharmaceutical practices. The Director will work alongside peers within and outside the pharmacy to ensure strong foundational medication management across the organization.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Strategic Leadership:
    • Provide strategic direction for pharmacy department operations in the areas of responsibility.
    • Foster a collaborative and innovative work environment that encourages professional growth and excellence in pharmaceutical care.
    • Recruit, train, and evaluate pharmacy staff to ensure a high level of performance and staff engagement.
    • Develop and implement operational strategies to enhance pharmacy performance and improve patient outcomes.
    • Assume responsibility for comprehensive communication streams across all pharmacy service lines.
  2. Operational Management:
    • Oversee daily inpatient pharmacy operations, including medication dispensing, inventory management, and regulatory compliance.
    • Strive to implement practices and identify opportunities that afford the pharmacy department operate within budget and meet financial performance goals.
    • Develop and implement policies and procedures to enhance operational efficiency and quality of care.
    • Accountable for inpatient department compliance with company policies and procedures.
  3. Financial Management:
    • Contribute to budgeting, forecasting, and financial performance of pharmacy operations.
    • Identify opportunities for cost savings and revenue enhancement.
    • Leverage 340B strategically for revenue generation, cost savings.
    • Conduct market research and competitive analysis to proactively identify trends, opportunities, and challenges in the pharmacy landscape.
  4. Regulatory Compliance:
    • Ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local regulations governing inpatient pharmacy practice.
    • Maintain accreditation standards and participate in audits and inspections as necessary.
    • Stay current with changes in pharmacy law and practice standards, and implement necessary changes in practice.
  5. Quality Improvement:
    • Lead quality improvement initiatives in the areas of responsibility related to medication safety.
    • Develop and implement performance metrics and quality indicators to assess the effectiveness of pharmacy services.
    • Facilitate continuous education and training for pharmacy staff to promote best practices in medication management.
    • Lead and mentor pharmacy management and staff, fostering a culture of excellence, continuous improvement, and professional growth.
    • Lead the implementation of pharmacy management systems and technology solutions that streamline operations and enhance patient care.
  6. Interdepartmental Collaboration:
    • Serve as a key liaison between the inpatient pharmacy department and other hospital departments, including nursing, medicine, and administration.
    • Participate in multidisciplinary committees and provide input medication management and pharmacy operational impacts.
    • Work closely with Director of Clinical Pharmacy, Director of Retail Pharmacy and 340B Coordinator to provide a cohesive pharmacy program within the organization.
  7. Community and Professional Engagement:
    • Represent the pharmacy department in community and professional organizations.
    • Foster relationships with external stakeholders, including pharmaceutical companies, regulatory agencies, and professional associations.
    • Enhance the patient and customer experience by implementing best practices in service delivery, medication management, and patient education.

Qualifications:

  • Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) degree from an accredited institution, required.
  • Current pharmacy licensure in the state of Mississippi, required.
  • Minimum of 1 year of progressive pharmacy leadership experience, preferably in a hospital setting, preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of pharmacy regulations and medication management.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
  • Proven ability to lead and motivate a diverse team.
  • Strong understanding of pharmacy laws, regulations, and best practices.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Proficiency in pharmacy management software and technology.

Working Conditions:

  • This position may require occasional evening or weekend hours for meetings or special projects.
  • The Director will work in a hospital environment with potential exposure to hazardous materials and medications.
