The Medical Laboratory Science Department at the University of South Dakota School of Health Sciences is seeking a 9-month MLS Faculty member to join our team. This position offers the flexibility of being either full-time or part-time. Below is a list of responsibilities for this position:
Teaching responsibilities may include any of the following:
  • Clinical Chemistry
  • Body Fluid and Urinalysis
  • Phlebotomy
  • Immunohematology
  • Molecular diagnostics
  • Parasitology
  • Hematology
  • Quality Assurance/Lab math
  • Introduction to MLS
  • Infectious diseases and public health
Lab management responsibilities may include a minimum of any of the following:
  • Maintenance of hematology, chemistry, and molecular analyzers
  • Maintenance of other lab equipment such as microscopes, scales, pipets, and pH meters
  • Collaborate on and/or lead the development of lab procedures and activities
  • Monitor and maintain supply inventory
  • Ensure readiness of all equipment prior to lab sessions (including setup and tear down)
  • Lead laboratory sessions including preparing pre-lab discussions
Service:
  • Participate in service for the MLS Department, including but not limited to advising, recruiting, alumni engagement, curriculum development, programmatic assessment, involvement in student organizations, and clinical affiliate site development
  • Participate in service to the School, University, community, as well as to the MLS profession
  • Participate in and advocate for student involvement and professional development with professional organizations and awareness of current events in MLS and health care
Required Qualifications:
  • Current and ongoing professional certification by the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or its equivalent as a Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS)
  • Experience in an accredited, CLIA certified medical diagnostic laboratory
  • A bachelor’s degree
Preferred Qualifications:
  • A master’s degree or higher
  • Previous higher education or clinical teaching experience in the Medical Laboratory field

Established in the 1940s as Medical Technology, the Medical Laboratory Science Department is one of nine departments housed in the School of Health Sciences. The department is a unique, innovative program that has graduated quality students for over 75 years, valuing a collaborative approach that aligns with the School of Health Sciences and Sanford School of Medicine’s vision for interprofessional education. The University is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission and the department offers a BS degree in Medical Laboratory Science, partnering with the most respected NAACLS-accredited MLS programs in the region. Additionally, USD MLS is the only program in South Dakota to offer a minor in Medical Laboratory Practice.
