Position Title: Teacher

Department: Elementary School

Reports To: Principal

Summary:
To instruct students in activities designed to promote social, physical, and intellectual growth need for successful progress in elementary school. To meet the needs of the special education students in an inclusive environment. To instruct students in a confidential, positive manner. To provide a good foundation to learning where each student takes responsibility for their learning and strives to do their personal best.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Plans and instructs based on the Indiana State Standards and local curriculum. Instruct students using materials adopted by the state of Indiana and South Newton School Corporation. Requisitions materials necessary to fulfill the curriculum.
  • Practice and reinforce skills taught in occupational, physical, and /or speech therapy.
  • Develops and uses instructional materials suitable for verbal or visual instruction of pupils with a wide range of mental, physical, and emotional levels.
  • Provides an appropriate climate to establish and reinforce acceptable pupil behavior, attitudes and social skills.
  • Develops lesson plans and instructional materials to provide individualized and small group instruction to adapt the curriculum to the needs of the students.
  • Cooperates and collaborates with other professional staff members.
  • Provides individual and small group instruction designed to meet individual needs of pupils in communications skills, health habits, physical skills, and development of self-concepts.
  • Evaluates student’s academic and social growth, keeps appropriate records and documentation, and prepares progress reports. Identifies student needs and makes appropriate referrals and develops strategies for individual education plans.
  • Follows the adopted IEP (individual education plan) and accommodations for special education students.
  • Communicates regularly with parents by means of a newsletter, notes, phone calls, and conferences.
  • Assists in student supervision while children are loading and unloading buses, in the gym, in the classroom, and playground. Supervise students on the bus to and from school as needed.
  • Promotes parent participation, informational meetings, and involvement in educational activities provided for their children.
  • Follows and implements the state and board approved school improvement plan with fidelity.
  • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned which are necessary for the daily operation of the school program.


Qualifications Requirements:
Ability to work with students, staff, and the school community; Ability to speak grammatically correct English


Education and/or Experience:
Bachelor’s Degree. Valid Elementary Teaching License.


Language Skills:
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general information, special education procedures from the school and Cooperative School Services, professional journals, and educational research. Ability to fill out reports on Harmony. Ability to speak using grammatically correct English. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from administrators, staff, parents, or general public.


Mathematical Skills:
Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations. Ability to report and interpret student data.


Reasoning Ability:
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with students in a variety of situations, such as recess, cafeteria, and classrooms.


Other Skills and Abilities:
Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with students, peers, and parents; skill in oral and written communication. Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory to instructional program; ability to plan and implement lessons based on state standards and school goals.
