Clinical Lab | Cape Girardeau, MO | Full Time
Job Summary The lab assistant position is one of flexibility and accountability. The assistant is responsible for the handling of specimens coming into the lab, answers phones, directs/and assists as a phlebotomist when the need arises, and assists Medical Technologists as applicable with lab testing. This position requires the person to be able to move in and out of different duties as the shift requires and keep things going smoothly. It requires both leadership and teamwork abilities; the person must be open minded and up to daily challenges Essential Functions- Process lab specimens brought into the lab (documents any specimen notes such as hemolysis and lipemia as applicable into LIS); Distribute acceptable specimens to clinical laboratory for testing; Prepare and send out specimens to reference labs
- Inventory / Stock processing area and lab analytical with supplies. Order send out supplies
- Secretarial duties include answering phone calls, faxing results, and reviewing pending logs
- Sample management duties include distributing specimens to the correct areas of the lab and archiving specimens
- Load specimens onto lab instruments, as applicable
- Specimen packaging and shipping (maintains current training requirements)
- Aids MLT / MLS techs in performing QA projects, as assigned
- Waived and Moderate Complexity testing includes performance of Quality Control tests with each test; reporting results promptly to nursing staff or physician
- Assist with providing direction to the phlebotomy staff: assist with outpatient draws, send staffing to nursing home (processor may go if time allows), pick up specimens on floors already drawn (processor should pick up specimens as time allows)
- Inoculates body fluids, exudates, skin scrapings, autopsy, and surgical specimens according to Microbiology departmental policy
- Performs gram staining, as applicable, according to Microbiology departmental policy
- Any other duties as needed to drive to the Vision, fulfill the Mission and abide by the Values of the organization
- High School Diploma or Equivalent required
- Associate's Degree Science related field preferred
- BLS - Basic Life Support Upon Hire required
