About This RoleSteps one and two gave the Apprentice the basic skills to use the common tools and techniques associated with powerline work. Step two introduced the Apprentice to energized secondary work to teach them the principles of live work. During step three the Apprentice will begin energized primary work. In addition, the Apprentice will learn how to connect single phase transformers.
  • Complete set of personal climbing gear MUST be obtained no later than the end of step two Apprenticeship, no exceptions.
While working aloft on or near energized primary circuits the step three Apprentice must be directly supervised by a Lineman or Foreman at the same physical location as the Apprentice (on the pole with, in the bucket with or adjacent to).

  • Hanging with blocks from pole.
  • Making connections to transformers.
  • Operation of switches.
  • Fusing.
  • Apparatus grounding (case grounds, etc.).
  • Taking primary AMP readings.
  • Conductor transferring.
  • Lay out/hot arms
  • Lateral transfers
  • Sagging primary conductors
  • Dead-ending primary conductors
  • Rigging for transfers
  • Material handler transfers
  • Working on reconductor projects.
  • Installing stringing blocks.
  • Tangent (straight line)
  • Slight angle
  • Hard Angle
  • Primary clipping and 1ying.
  • Copper ties
  • Aluminum ties

  • Installing dead-end assembly.
