General Statement Of ResponsibilitiesThe Prevention Coordinator is responsible for overseeing the Prevention Program and its staff. The Prevention Coordinator assists with the completion of all prevention activities including prevention education and training to the community, event coordination, outreach, and collaboration with community agencies. The Prevention Coordinator will assist in delivering services to parents, children, at-risk youth, and elders. Focus is on suicide prevention and awareness taking into account that prevention efforts, which include but not limited to, the causes of suicidal feelings i.e. bullying, isolation, low self-esteem, socio-economic concerns, trauma.
Specific Duties And Responsibilities
  • Supervise, counsel, coach and train the Prevention Outreach Specialist and Elder Navigator.
  • Follow the scope of work that are under the funding agencies project narratives and notice of award(s).
  • Attend mandatory funding agency meetings, webinars, and use their assigned website for reporting or other purposes.
  • Monitor the funding agency budgets with working knowledge of internal Fiscal protocols to order supplies.
  • Lead the program’s services, reporting requirements, and collect data for the monthly, quarterly, and annual reporting.
  • Expand services to other service areas including school districts, Tribal centers, and internal collaboration to support the community prevention activities and conduct those activities accordingly.
  • Attend meetings as required/assigned and represent SIHC to advisory, educational, collaborative or networking bodies.
  • Promote awareness of prevention services, community involvement, family unity, and individual wellness at community events, gatherings, and public relations campaigns and prevention education events.
  • Coordinate and organize activities to increase awareness of suicide risk, identifying signs of suicide risk, and promote community wellness through involvement in cultural and social activities known to support individual and community resilience, which includes becoming certified to conduct trainings.
  • Provide support, via appropriate referrals, to individuals and families who are at risk and in need of linkages to on-going services, and make referrals to Behavioral health clinicians for assessment, early intervention and/or treatment services.
  • Supervises and assists Prevention Team to prepares monthly flyers (or other) of the activities to be conducted to the Event Planner as required.
  • Intergenerational activities that support cultural, language, and community resiliency with prevention staff and collaborate with other SIHC departments.
  • Encourage outreach and prevention education that includes all prevention staff to participate in providing all age groups referrals, activities, and community support for family wellness and reduce risk;
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule may be required based on need.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications Education/Experience : B.S./B.A. degree from an accredited institution in a social work, sociology, public health or closely related field of study, OR, a combination of academic study and work experience that demonstrates competence in a closely related area of work will be considered. Must have knowledge of the Indian community;Must be able to communicate with confidence verbally and in writing;Must be able to organize work so that it is accomplished in a timely manner;Must have knowledge of responsibilities involved in doing work that is highly confidential, and the handling and processing of confidential information;Must have knowledge of local area, particularly Indian reservations.
Licenses/Certifications : A valid California driver’s license is required at the time of appointment and must be maintained throughout employment. Applicant must be insurable under SIHC vehicle insurance policy at the time of hire and throughout employment. Certifications and/or licenses appropriate to the positions required education and profession must also be valid and maintained.
Character: Applicants must have a reputation for honesty and trustworthiness. Must be responsible and able to exercise good judgment, accept administrative supervision, pay attention to detail, follow instructions, including the ability to interact effectively and communicate with people in a professional and courteous manner. Must be highly confidential and respect confidentiality to all limits of the governing laws and ethics. Applicant must be able to work as a team with other staff. Applicant should be sensitive to client’s needs and knowledgeable about the local Indian community.
Other: Applicants must currently possess, or be willing to attain, a thorough knowledge of laws, rules, and regulations governing mental health practice, a basic knowledge of mental health treatment and the legal and ethical guidelines relating to the provision of those services. Applicants must successfully pass a pre-employment tuberculin skin test or x-ray, and blood/urine drug screening test. Health must be adequate to perform all duties of the position. Applicants must complete a SIHC application and submit it to Human Resources prior to the close dates indicated. The position is co-located at the Alpine Clinic.
Indian PreferenceINDIAN PREFERENCE : In the filling of any SIHC job vacancy, preference may be given to qualified Native American Indians, pursuant to the Indian Preference Hiring Act, 25 USC 472, unless other laws require the filling of a vacancy without regard to Indian preference (e.g. Public Law (P.L.) 94-437, “Indian Health Care Improvement Act (IHCIA). To receive Indian preference for any SIHC position, the applicant must be enrolled, or be eligible for enrollment, as an American Indian with their Tribe, or must be certified as an American Indian from the designated Tribal Representative. Applicants claiming Indian preference must attach verification of their claim to the SIHC application, including Certification of form BIA-4432, which is available from the SIHC Human Resources Department. If verification is not or cannot be verified, the applicant will not receive Indian preference for purposes of the interview.
This position is grant funded through July 30, 2025 and is subject to extension.
