The Culinary Academy of Las Vegas (CALV) is the country’s leading nonprofit culinary and hospitality training institute. CALV’s mission is to train people for successful hospitality careers in Las Vegas. CALV’s vision is to reduce poverty and eliminate unemployment by providing employability and vocational skills to youth, adults, and displaced workers.

The English as a Second Language (ESL) Instructor will be responsible for designing and delivering engaging and effective English language lessons to beginner-level adult learners. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in language education, a deep understanding of ESL methodologies, and a commitment to fostering a supportive learning environment. This role requires the ability to conduct academic and language assessments for the purpose of evaluating student placement in courses and using this information to tailor instruction accordingly. The instructor will also be expected to consistently develop and maintain curricula, and other proprietary course materials.

The position will work in collaboration with the curriculum team, hospitality program instructors, and other professionals across the CALV enterprise to design and deliver language instruction supporting CALV’s vocational training programs.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Teach 4-week English courses to beginner-level learners focusing on listening, speaking, reading, and writing.
  • Provide one-on-one, small group, large group instruction to students at different language and skill levels.
  • Provide individualized assistance and support to English Lab students, when needed.
  • Assess student language competency, utilizing a variety of assessment tools; Conduct ongoing assessments to evaluate student progress and proficiency levels.
  • Maintain and record daily attendance and progress reports.
  • Participate regularly in faculty/administrative meetings to improve the quality of instruction.
  • In consultation with the curriculum and instructional teams, design, develop and implement content material to support specific language needs of different students.
  • Consult with Instructors to ensure accuracy and effectiveness of training materials.
  • Provide coverage in Vocational English classes, when needed.
  • Other duties, as assigned.

EDUCATION & SKILLS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Education, Linguistics, TESOL, or a related field (preferred)
  • Certified in TEFL, TESL, CELTA, TESOL, or equivalent (preferred)
  • Minimum of two years experience teaching linguistically and culturally diverse adult learners
  • Knowledge of adult-learning principles and ability to differentiate instruction, based on learning needs.
  • Experience teaching English to beginner-level students, utilizing a broad range of teaching methodologies
  • Knowledge of lesson planning/curriculum development
  • Knowledge of or experience working in the hospitality or service industry (preferred)
  • Basic computer skills, including use of Microsoft Office, and Canvas
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to connect with students from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds
  • Results-driven, self-motivated, self-directed; excellent analytical and writing skills.
  • Bilingual (preferred)
