About the Position

Career Opportunity
The city of Las Vegas invites applications for Vehicle Parts Specialist I (X) .This position ensures an accurate inventory of essential parts and materials used to repair City of Las Vegas Fleet vehicles and equipment. Provides assistance with maintaining contract compliance with vendors.
Distinguishing Characteristics
Vehicle Parts Specialist I -This is the entry level class in the Vehicle Parts Specialist series. This class is distinguished from the Vehicle Parts Specialist II by the performance of more routine tasks and duties assigned to position within the series. This class may be used as a training class or the class may contain positions wherein employees perform routine tasks on a permanent basis and therefore remain at an entry level.
Vehicle Parts Specialist II -This is the full journey level class in the Vehicle Parts Specialist series. This class is distinguished from the Vehicle Parts Specialist I by the performance of the full range of duties as assigned. Employees at this level receive only occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise, and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies of the work unit. Positions in this class are flexibly staffed and are normally filled by advancement from the I level, or when filled from the outside, by candidates with prior experience and certifications who can perform immediately at the higher level.
Supervision Received
Vehicle Parts Specialist I
Receives immediate supervision from higher level staff.
Vehicle Parts Specialist II
Receives general supervision from higher level staff.
Examination Process : A civil service examination will be conducted in accordance with the Civil Service Rules of the city of Las Vegas. The supplemental questions are the examination. Falsification of information may result in disqualification from a recruitment or removal from a City position. Additional information will not be accepted after the closing date. The supplemental questions are weighted 100% for placement on an eligible list, and must be worked on individually by the applicant only. The supplemental questions of all qualified applicants will be reviewed for placement on an eligible list.

ELIGIBLE LIST:
You must score 70% or higher on the examination to be placed on the eligible list. The eligible list will remain in effect for a period of 6 months from the date of certification and may be extended for a period of up to 2 years.
The purpose of this recruitment is to establish an eligible list for current and/ or future openings which may include part-time or full-time positions.
Selection Process: Final candidate selection will include list placement and may include hiring interview (if applicable). Any individual offered employment will be required to pass a pre-employment drug test, complete background check, and may be required to demonstrate the ability to perform the physical requirements of the job. Some positions may require preliminary background checks.
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES

Essential Functions:
  1. Oversees Parts Storage facilities and performs continual inventory verification.
  2. Estimate appropriate stocking levels for parts storage rooms.
  3. Accepts deliveries and verifies for completeness and damage upon receipt.
  4. Provide estimated time of delivery for parts to mechanics, update work order notes for long-lead parts.
  5. Reviews and verifies invoices are entered into the Fleet Management Information System (RTA) properly for each work order.
  6. Tracks warranty parts replacement.
  7. Verifies warranty exchanges and/or credits are completed.
  8. Maintains accurate and complete MSDS for all chemicals, products, and hazards within the Fleet Maintenance Facilities.
  9. Works with vendors to maintain best possible pricing.
  10. Oversees outside vendors that replenish minor shop-supplies.
  11. Verifies contract pricing is being maintained by vendors.
  12. Assists with monitoring budget usage and provide recommendations for annual budgeting.
  13. Monitor current trends in the market and maintain an inventory that will support the City of Las Vegas Fleet and Fuel Services department in maintaining operational vehicles and equipment for our user groups.
Marginal Functions:
  1. Maintains cleanliness of work areas frequently utilized.
  2. Assists Senior Mechanics with Annual Shop Tool and Equipment Inventory.
  3. Monitor condition of CLV small tools and equipment regularly utilized by Fleet employees.
  4. Stay abreast of trends and innovations in the fields of Fleet Maintenance and Inventory Management.
  5. Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Vehicle Parts Specialist I
Experience:
One year of experience working in the automotive or heavy equipment field including parts delivery.
One or more years of experience working at an automotive or heavy equipment dealership in wholesale parts or fleet parts preferred.
Training:
Equivalent to graduation from high school.
License or Certificate
Possession of an appropriate valid driver's license on the date of application, and maintenance thereafter.
Vehicle Parts Specialist II
Experience:
Two years of experience working the automotive or heavy equipment parts inventory and procurement field or one year working for the City of Las Vegas as a Vehicle Parts Specialist I.
Two or more years of experience working at an automotive or heavy equipment dealership in wholesale parts or fleet parts preferred.
Training:
Equivalent to graduation from high school.
Licenses and Certifications:
Possession of Nevada Class C driver's license, or a boarder state, at the time of application and maintenance thereafter.
Possession of a fork lift certificate issued by the City of Las Vegas within 6 months of the date of appointment.
Possession of the Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) P1 - Medium-Heavy Truck Parts Specialist on the date of application, and maintenance thereafter.
Possession of the Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) P2 - Automobile Parts Specialist on the date of application, and maintenance thereafter.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Vehicle Parts Specialist I
Knowledge of:
Parts ordering process.
Receiving parts to inventory.
Charging out parts that Mechanics request.
Purchase Requisition creation and approval process.
Parts requisitions and ordering.

COMPENSATION
Annual Base Pay Increases

Retirement
  • Benefit eligible employees participate in the Public Employees' Retirement System of Nevada (PERS). PERS, a statewide defined benefit plan, calculates retirement benefits based on 2.25 percent (current percentage for employees hired 7/1/15 and after) for each year of service, applied to the employee's highest consecutive 36-month average salary. PERS also requires that employees share 50 percent of the PERS contribution, which is implemented by reducing the City's salary ranges. The highest consecutive 36-month average salary is increased commensurate with the salary range reductions required by PERS.
Deferred Compensation
  • The city offers a 457(b) Plan which is a government deferred compensation plan similar to a 401(k) plan. It offers both pre-tax and after-tax savings and investment options.
Medical, Dental and Vision Insurance
  • Employees are covered the first of the month following date of employment. Five medical plans, two dental and two vision plans are available. City pays 100% of employee premium 50% of dependent premium.
Life and AD&D Insurance
  • City provides $20,000 policies at no cost.
  • Additional voluntary life insurance and AD&D insurance available for purchase.
Disability Insurance
  • City provides a long term disability policy:
    • LTD: Employees who normally work at least 30 hours/week are eligible. Benefits begin after 90 days of disability. Payment is up to 60% of earnings, up to $11,000/month, and may not be supplemented with sick or vacation.
