Southern is Hiring a Metering Specialist - Gulfport / Biloxi Near Biloxi, MS

JOB SUMMARY: This position is responsible for coordinating metering efforts within each of the operating districts to ensure proper application and operation of revenue metering devices. This position is responsible for maintenance, troubleshooting and repair of large commercial, industrial and wholesale, substation, generating plant and company interchange metering systems including the communication segment as well as the downloading of billing data when applicable.

JOB REQUIREMENTS:

  1. In-depth knowledge of revenue metering and metering systems.

  2. Computer literacy with the ability to learn unfamiliar software applications.

  3. Working knowledge of electronics or the ability/desire to learn quickly.

  4. Ability to fabricate specialty metering equipment as required using shop equipment.

  5. Metering responsibility for an MPC Division including substation and plant work in that area, including climbing of steps, lifting of equipment, climbing ladders and all other physical requirements needed to do a job in this environment.

  6. Field work should be expected daily, with the possibility of overnight travel.

MAJOR JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Collect all revenue billing data not received due to communication failures – High priority.

  2. Complete Field tests for customer complaints, interchange tie points with other utilities, and all metering at Chevron CoGen.

  3. Troubleshoot metering issues reported through the Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) system.

  4. Program advanced meters for MPC substations, industrial and wholesale revenue.

  5. Provide direct pulses to customers by installing equipment after calculating pulse weights.

  6. Test new features and upgrades for advanced meters and deploy to field.

  7. Work with suppliers of advanced meters to resolve issues found.

  8. Metering information and infrastructure support for line crews, electric servicemen, engineering, and substation personnel.

  9. Support the Power Quality Engineering group with metering data.

  10. Install, change out and complete verification of all I.T. rated metering installations.

  11. Review and approve electrical prints for substations both new and rebuilds – follow up on issues found.

  12. Verify field substation panel and equipment wiring before installation of megawatt-hour meter(s).

  13. Install and troubleshoot communications equipment for advanced meters at substations, customer sites, plants, and interchange tie points.

  14. Monitor installation of mobile substation and support any necessary metering for billing.

  15. Work ARMS orders to help mitigate record discrepancies by verifying equipment in field.

  16. Support Cooperative Energy including meter programming, troubleshooting, communications installation, and being on call for failures of metering in Cooperative Energy substations.

  17. Support Division during storms as damage assessment teams, troubleshooters, and logistics support.

  18. Support the MSU Metering School by teaching classes.

  19. Coordinate metering equipment installation and maintenance for MPC, Singing River EPA, Coast EPA, Pearl River Valley EPA, Southern Pine EPA, and East Mississippi EPA.

  20. Mentor on-the-job training for Metering Technicians.

  21. Understand kW/kVA/kVAR lead/kVAR lag and how they relate for use in load calculations, CT/VT sizing, and phasor diagrams.

  22. Troubleshoot systems based on phasor analysis.

  23. Calculate pulse/mass memory values to ensure accurate metering to ensure proper revenue.

  24. Accurately document and retention of metering equipment deployed to the field.
