Southwestern Community Action Council, Inc. is Hiring a Child and Family Specialist Near Huntington, WV

Southwestern Community Action Council is a private non-profit agency whose mission is to facilitate the social and economic well-being of low-income families in Cabell, Lincoln, Mason, and Wayne counties in West Virginia. We are a leader in the development and provision of a variety of community programs and services provided by qualified, highly trained, client focused staff. Our programs include Early Head Start / Head Start, the Mason County Homeless Shelter, Weatherization Assistance, Case Management / Homemaker Services, Senior Community Services (Mature Worker), and Veteran Supportive Services.
We currently have an opening for an Infant & Toddler Educator for our Head Start/Early Head Start program in Huntington, WV to join our team and achieve great things together.

Pay Details (subject to change)

Level I: $16.00/hour Level II: $17.52/hour Level III: $19.22/hour

Level Qualifications

Level I. AA Degree in Early Childhood Education or related field. If in related field must obtain Child Development Associate (CDA) Credential for Infant and Toddler Caregiver.

Level II. A.A. Degree in Early Childhood Education or related field area and one year of experience in the Early Childhood field.

Level III. B.A./B.S. Degree, prefer Early Childhood Education or related area. If in related area must obtain Child Development Associate (CDA) Credential for Infant and Toddler Caregiver.

Basic Qualifications

  • Ability to plan, train, organize and manage
  • self-motivated with ability to work without direct supervision
  • writing skills
  • general understanding of the needs of families
  • ability to relate well with people
  • must have valid driver's license with safe driving record
  • must successfully pass a physical exam each year and a criminal history record check.
  • Must pass drug screen.

Level II or Level III qualifications

Position Details (This is a sampling of duties and responsibilities of this position)

  • Assist with center/home based staff in a cooperative and supportive way, including covering classrooms and home visits.
  • Assist in maintaining a safe and healthy environment in the classroom.
  • Work with families to obtain information required by the funding source.
  • Meet with families to assist with goal setting.
  • Assure educational activities are carried out in accordance with Office of Head Start regulations.
  • Promote language development in children.
  • Promote school readiness skills and encourage parents/guardians to become engaged with school readiness for their child.
  • Use positive guidance techniques to assist children in developing self-confidence and self-esteem.
  • Work cooperatively with parents/guardians and education staff to establish a transition plan for children.
  • Assist the Early Head Start Education Specialist and the EHS Assistant Director/Education Coach with training.
  • Assist with recruitment and enrollment.
  • Make home visits as requested.
  • Monitor center files and record keeping system; assuring compliance with program policies and providing a written report outlining any findings.
  • Engage and maintain a cooperative working relationship with agencies and resources within assigned counties and attend inter-agency meetings when needed or requested.
  • Ensure staff is promoting early literacy. Reflect a pleasant and professional attitude towards the staff, children, parents and community.
  • Attain an understanding of the connection between improving parent/family engagement and enhancing child development and school readiness.
