Job Skills / Requirements
Provides for the safety and protection of Museum employees, guests, and assets by maintaining a positive, welcoming, active, and visible presence throughout the Museum’s public and private spaces. As a member of the Protection Services Department, the Gallery Attendant works closely with their peers, supervisors, and senior staff to fulfill the mission of the museum and provide exceptional guest experiences while maintaining the highest standards of professional practices.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Genuinely welcomes all guests and vendors with a friendly, approachable, professional attitude as a host in Museum Galleries and across Museum property
- Assists guests and staff regarding general inquiries
- Maintains security of assigned area artworks by continuously patrolling area and conducting daily inventory of artwork
- Report any observed damage to artwork or facilities immediately
- Responds promptly to, and investigates, all alarm events in assigned area to maintain facility security
- Politely and professionally enforces Museum safety and security policies and procedures with all guests, volunteers, and staff
- Prepares forms and reports, as necessary, in an accurate and timely manner
- Implements timely and appropriate response to Museum policy violations, safety and security concerns and/or breaches, fire, severe weather, and other emergencies by following established security procedures as trained and notifies Supervisory Staff immediately
- Monitors assigned areas (internal and external) for suspicious or unusual activity and immediately reports such activity to the Protection Services Leader on Duty
- Provides proper care and maintenance of assigned uniforms and equipment
- Maintains a neat personal appearance and meets uniform specifications
- Escorts vendors, contractors, or visitors and controls access to secure areas as assigned
- Supports a healthy and safe environment by maintaining clean equipment and assigned work area, which may include minor cleaning or sanitizing of surfaces (i.e. use of Sanitizing Wipes) with proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
- May be cross-trained to support Control Room or other Protection Services operations as needed
- Performs other duties, or related work as assigned, or may be required
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or GED required
- Ability to read, speak, and write clearly and concisely using the English language
- Ability to be First Aid, CPR, and AED Certified, maintain certification, and render medical assistance as necessary
- Maintains a professional image at all times – position requires wearing a uniform and meeting uniform standards

- Ability to work a varied schedule including weekends, evenings, and late nights

- Focused on attention to detail, taking initiative, and maintaining a positive attitude
- Demonstrates integrity, dependability, exceptional interpersonal skills and ability to effectively work with people at all levels of organization
- Ability to work independently, be flexible for interruptions and changing priorities
- Ability to remain calm, and exercise good judgement and discretion when dealing with stressful and difficult situations
- Ability to politely and professionally work with all guests, staff, volunteers, and contractors and as needed enforce Museum security and safety policies
- Ability to operate basic computer programs for e-mail, training, and general business purposes
- Previous Guest Service and/or Security experience preferred
- Previous Museum experience preferred
Work Environment
- To include, but not limited to museum space (gallery and non-gallery), offices, exterior grounds of the facility, parking garage, and other
Physical Demands
- Must be in good physical condition to carry out the requirements of the position, including but not limited to:
- Ability to lift, carry, push, pull and/or move equipment, supplies, etc. of up to 30 pounds throughout the workday
- Ability to stand and walk for extended periods of time, up to entirety of shift
- Ability to work in all weather conditions
- Ability to quickly move around all areas of Museum property – including use of stairs, step-stools, ladders
- Ability to reach, bend, squat/crouch, climb, kneel, crawl and twist
- Use computer, telephone, and communications equipment (cell phone, radios, etc.)
- Sees and hears, or uses prosthetics that will enable these senses to function adequately, so that the requirements of this position can be fully met.
Position Type/Expected Hours of Work
- This is a non-exempt position. This position is eligible for overtime pay
- Works beyond normal working hours, on weekends and/or holidays when necessary
