Description

Spokane Public Schools is seeking qualified candidates who are prepared and excited to provide a 21st century learning environment that effectively addresses the emerging necessity of social emotional supports and blending learning strategies. This position will provide direction and expertise for implementing performance expectations, district curriculum, district learning targets and assessment in classrooms that will improve the performance and success of students.

POSITION IS PART OF SPECIAL PROGRAMS - SITE LOCATION MAY NOT STAY THE SAME EVERY YEAR
  • FTE: 1.0
  • CONTRACT TYPE: CONTINUING
  • ANTICIPATED START DATE: 2024/2025 SCHOOL YEAR
  • POSITION REQUIREMENT: This position requires a Washington State Teaching Certificate with the appropriate Endorsement to teach in the content area advertised in this posting. The Professional Education Standards Board (PESB), can provide additional endorsement requirement information through their site; PESB Course and Endorsement Lookup
  • REQUIRED ENDORSEMENT: ELEMENTARY EDUCATION
  • Benefits-Medical/Dental/Vision through SEBB (School Employee Benefits Board) are provided for employees who work at least 630 hours per academic year.
  • Additional benefits may include vacation, sick, personal days, and paid holidays.
  • Most positions have additional pay provisions above what is represented on the salary schedule, all in accordance with the applicable collective bargaining agreements as negotiated.

SALARY: Salary depends upon applicable prior certificated experience, approved credits, earned degrees, and the FTE of the position.

Responsibilities

  • Plan and assist staff to implement a program of mathematics and/or literacy and research based practices in classrooms that will improve the performance and success of Title/LAP students.
  • Work with staff members to implement an effective math and/or literacy program for students.
  • Serve as a consultant to Title/LAP and the basic education staff members by modeling/demonstrating effective instructional practices, demonstrating appropriate classroom strategies, and providing timely feedback information.
  • Serve as a peer coach with classroom teachers as they move from teacher directed instruction to more child-centered learning that incorporate the elements of active learning.
  • Assist in training teachers to: Make individual assessments of student needs; Plan and implement effective lessons and appropriate learning activities; Assess and measure student progress.
  • Assist staff with the implementation of the state and district essential learnings and assessment requirements.
  • Involve parents/guardians of children in their educational program to promote a continuing home/school partnership.
  • Provide ongoing training to staff for developmentally appropriate practices and child-centered classrooms, including reading and writing processes.
  • Coordinate student programs with basic education and Title/LAP staff to provide successful and inclusionary programs that follow state and federal rules and regulations.
  • Maintain required student and program documentation.
  • Attend TITLE / LAP in-service meetings and facilitate in-building team meetings.
  • Adjust workday as necessary to provide in-service.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Qualifies for a Washington State teaching certificate with appropriate endorsements as required by law and regulations. If possessing an initial or provisional certificate, the candidate must hold the appropriate endorsement.
  • Have completed five years of successful classroom teaching experience, demonstrating active student involvement, integration of curriculum, flexible grouping patterns, use of appropriate materials, use of reading/writing processes, use of thinking strategies and problem solving strategies throughout curriculum areas, application of authentic assessment practices, and application of thinking strategies.
  • Demonstrates classroom management procedures that provide for large and small groups, and individuals, and provides an environment conducive to learning.
  • Uses appropriate disciplinary procedures, establishes clear parameters for student behavior, responds properly when problems occur, and helps students toward selfdiscipline.
  • Demonstrates ability to communicate clearly and effectively in both written and oral form.
  • Flexible in learning new concepts, cooperates with others, and adapts to a variety of assignments and conditions.
  • Enthusiastic and displays an overall optimism toward teaching and student learning.
  • Assesses needs of students, prescribes and implements effective lessons to meet students' needs through the use of appropriate and current instructional skills.
  • Gains the respect and confidence of students, parents, and staff through modeling appropriate demeanor, behavior, and attire.
  • Sets and attains high level of expectations with a commitment to using available resources so that accomplishment and growth occurs.
  • Develops favorable relationships with students; listens to, cares for, and works collaboratively with them.
  • Demonstrates ability to work effectively with a diverse group of students, teachers, parents, and administrators in a confidential manner.
  • Relates positively to youth and adults of varying socioeconomic, cultural, ethnic backgrounds, different learning styles, and various disabilities.
  • Demonstrates the ability to learn new ideas and skills and to solve problems; the possession of a minimum cumulative GPA of at least 2.5 is expected. (This requirement may be waived if an inadequate pool of fully qualified applicants for a specific position exists.)
  • Aware of current educational developments and applications, works collaboratively with others; believes in the importance of education, and interested in the welfare of all students.
  • Uses democratic processes to work out problems in a supportive and understanding nonauthoritarian manner.
  • Integrates technology into planning, learning, and record-keeping activities.
  • Knowledge of effective teaching strategies related to the appropriate age of instruction. Demonstrated ability to apply this knowledge in a classroom setting.
  • Ability to demonstrate a thorough understanding of the instructional/learning process.
  • Willingness and commitment to participate in professional collaboration and student supervision.
  • Preference will be given to candidates who:

  • Have a master's degree in curriculum development, or instructional leadership, and/or course work in current reading/writing practices, curriculum integration, effective instructional strategies, cooperative learning, and authentic assessment.
  • Have experience in working with culturally, socially, and economically diverse student and parent/guardian populations.
  • Demonstrate leadership abilities in organizing, implementing, and maintaining an effective, collaborative instructional program with the school staff that includes the ability to clearly articulate the elements and implementation of active learning, process learning, and inclusivity.
  • Demonstrate effective presentation skills.
