Spotsylvania County Public Schools is Hiring a Middle School Reading Specialist - 2024 Near Fredericksburg, VA

Job Summary:

The Reading Specialist provides leadership in the implementation of research-based literacy practices within the school. Also serving as a Literacy Coach, the Reading Specialist is considered as a literacy

content expert and provides guidance on curriculum development that encourages student success.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Provides leadership in developing the Division’s literacy plan, tailoring specifically to meet and exceed the school’s vision and goals.
  • Provides leadership and training in implementing literacy assessments and screeners; records and reports literacy assessment results; interprets assessment results to inform instruction.
  • Provides leadership and service in the analyzing of literacy assessment data to design targeted interventions based on students’ identified areas of need
  • Designs and implements direct literacy services to students identified for intervention; oversees literacy services provided by assigned paraeducator(s).
  • Collaborates with classroom teachers and parents to create a Student Reading Plan for every student that includes progress monitoring data.
  • Collaborates with classroom teachers, ESOL teachers, Special Education teachers, instructional coaches, and admin in interpreting data and designing instruction and interventions.
  • Serves as a resource for teachers in implementing literacy instruction aligned with the Science of Reading through professional development presentations, model lessons, observation and feedback, and/or co-planning.
  • Maintains an inventory of all specialized materials and resources used for literacy support.
  • Identifies and/or organizes opportunities to help families better support literacy in the home (e.g. Outreach, Workshops, Resources, Student Reading Plan, etc.).
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience:

Required

  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university.
  • Currently possesses a Virginia Collegiate Professional or Postgraduate Professional License
  • Ability to obtain appropriate license(s) and/or endorsement(s) as required by the Commonwealth of Virginia and School Board

Preferred

  • Five (5) years of recent and successful teaching experience, ideally as an English Learning Arts (ELA) teacher.

Employment Terms: Employment may be offered as a 10-Month (200 Day), 10.5-Month (210 Day), 11-Month (220 Day) -OR- 12-Month (240 Day) contract, at a minimum of 7.5 hours worked per day. This position is evaluated annually. Additional compensation awarded for credits earned toward advanced degrees. New employees to Spotsylvania County will be compensated for up to 20 years of experience.
