Spotsylvania County School District is Hiring a School Division Maintenance Safety Officer (MSO) Near Spotsylvania, VA

Job Summary:

The School Division Maintenance Safety Officer (MSO) is critical to ensuring the well-being of resources and personnel performing maintenance work within school facilities. Conducting thorough inspections of Division facilities, the MSO ensures that work orders are properly completed using the necessary safety tools for HVAC, Electrical, Plumbing, and Mechanical maintenance and repairs.The MSO will ensure safety compliance by ensuring adherence to OSHA, State and Federal regulations and through the ongoing training of maintenance staff on safety work practices. This position will work closely with the Director of Maintenance, Director of School Safety and Security and County authorities regarding safety concerns of school facilities and to develop a safety program for maintenance activities within the Division.


Essential Job Functions:

  • Conducts regular inspections of school facilities to identify potential hazards, malfunctioning equipment, or health concerns such as mold, lead or asbestos (arranges third-party testing as required).
  • Investigates safety incidents that occur during maintenance activities; documents findings and reports them to management to prevent future occurrences.
  • Prepares and submits safety reports to the Director of Maintenance; presents safety reports to the Board at School Board meetings, as requested.
  • Develops risk assessments and safety protocols; determines cost-aware solutions and initiatives to drive forward the department’s goals and objectives.
  • Ensures safety operations budgeting guidelines are met; prioritizes expenditures to stay within the department’s allocated budget.
  • Ensures all maintenance procedures adhere to relevant safety regulations (OSHA, State and Federal)
  • Leads safety committee meetings and training programs (monthly and annually) to Maintenance staff; emphasizes best practices to promote safe and healthy work environments.
  • Trains and instructs employees in new safety methods or procedures.
  • Interprets the Maintenance department’s policies to enforce safety regulations and adherence to proper codes and standards of personnel.
  • Recommends action involving promotions, disciplinary action, and motivation of employees based on safety performance.
  • Maintains records and files, including employee safety training attendance.
  • Ensures the proper safety stock levels of repair or replacement parts in collaboration with the Parts department.
  • Recommends, develops, and oversees all certifications needed to safely operate equipment, including but not limited to, Forklift, Man lift, Boom lift, etc.
  • Consults with the Director of Maintenance on all matters not considered routine.
  • Collaborates with the School Safety Team to develop and maintain the Division's safety program.
  • Communicates frequently with the Director of Maintenance, members of School Administration and staff within the Administrative Services office.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.


Education and Experience:

Required

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Current (valid, non-expired) Driver’s License
  • Current (valid, non-expired) OSHA 30 certification AND Certified Safety Professional (CSP)
  • Ten (10) years of progressively responsible experience working as a safety officer within a facilities or construction environment
  • Ability to acquire and maintain Safety and Technician (EPA Universal CFC) certifications as federally required or required by the State, Department or School Board
  • Prior experience overseeing the safety of multiple locations that exceed 3 Million square feet


Special Requirements:

  • This position is designated as "Essential Personnel", which requires that employees report to their job site during emergency situations, such as snow, inclement weather, or other emergency situations. May be on call 24 hours, 7 days a week for emergency situations, including weather and other building emergencies.


Employment Terms:
Employment may be offered as a 12-Month (243 Day), full-time position. The work schedule for this position is 7.5 hours worked per day, excluding lunch. This position is evaluated annually.
