Spring Branch Independent School DistrictJob DescriptionHVAC Mechanic IJob Title: HVAC Mechanic I Reports To: HVAC Supervisor that is assigned by the Facilities Manager Classification: Auxiliary (Skilled Labor) Wage/Hour Status: Non-exempt Days: 250 Salary: See Compensation Plan for Auxiliary Pay Plan, Pay Grade 308 Contract: None Date Revised: 11/15/2023 Primary Purpose: Perform the full range of duties associated with installation, maintenance, and repair of ventilation, air conditioning and environmental control systems. Complex jobs will be reviewed with the supervisor to determine appropriate procedures and to assure that proper work methods are being followed. Employees receive work orders indicating the nature of the work to be done. They are expected to determine the materials, tools, and repair procedures needed. Limited supervision is given to this employee. Qualifications/Skills: Education/Certification:
  • High school diploma or equivalent. Two (2) years college preferred HVAC courses.
  • Valid current Class "C" Texas driver’s license.
  • EPA Universal license Certified to handle CFC’s under 40CFR, Part 82, sub part F or willing to secure within the 1st year of hiring.
  • Preferred Stationary Building Engineer License or ability to obtain within 12 months of employment.
  • Prefer HVAC license or electrical maintenance license with City of Houston or state; a positive asset but not a requirement.
Special Knowledge/Skills:
  • Working knowledge of heating, ventilation and refrigeration theory.
  • Working knowledge of the practices, methods, materials, and equipment used in the maintenance and repair of HVAC equipment.
  • Working knowledge of the design and operation of centrifugal and reciprocal compressors.
  • Working knowledge of electricity.
  • Working knowledge of the design and operation of pneumatic and digital control systems.
  • Ability to work well with peers and supervisor.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with district employees and community.
  • Proficiency in the use of specialized test and processing control equipment, including computer workstations involving HVAC programming, laptops utilized to download control programs, trouble shooting of computer process boards on various brands of cooling and heating equipment.
  • Capable of making independent, on the spot, "safe to operate" decisions regarding safety of students, staff and, the public.
Experience:
  • Minimum five (5) years experience required.
Major Duties and
Responsibilities:
Maintenance and Repair:
  • Troubleshoot and repair electrical control circuits.
  • Overhaul small reciprocal compressors.
  • Clean, lubricate and service ventilation, air conditioning, and environmental control equipment.
  • Set heating, air conditioning, ventilation and environmental control equipment into place.
  • Repair, replace, or calibrate controls, thermostats, switches, fuses, and electrical wiring.
  • Conduct energy management conservation surveys to realize most efficient, cost-effective use of HVAC energy.
  • Receive and complete work orders. Select material and hardware and generate time, materials, and job estimates.
  • Maintain accurate records on materials and labor used. Maintain inventory of district-owned tools, equipment, and materials.
  • Inspect and run projections. Work with building principals and supervisors to complete projects. Detect needed repairs on equipment following established inspection and walk through procedures.
  • Respond to emergency calls during regular hours and after hours.
Safety:
  • Operate tools and equipment according to established safety procedures.
  • Ensure that equipment is in safe operating condition.
  • Follow established safety procedures and techniques to perform job duties, including lifting, climbing, etc.
  • Correct unsafe conditions in work area and report any conditions that are not correctable to supervisor immediately.
  • Perform preventive maintenance on tools and equipment.
Other:
  • Adhere to all federal, state, and municipal laws, regulations, or codes and local board and departmental policies.
  • Complete daily man-hour logs and other required documentation.
  • Act as Project Lead person and point of contact, assist with new construction issues, assist energy operator, and work with city and village inspector when requested.
  • Possible to be on-call for afterhours, weekends, and holidays.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Supervisory
Responsibilities:
None Equipment Used: Laptop, meters, gages, welding equipment, ladder, hoist, hand and power tools, pipe bender, and propane torch. Light truck or van. Working Conditions: Mental Demands:
  • Maintain emotional control under stress.
  • Work with frequent interruptions.
  • This position requires regular in-person interaction with the public.
Physical Demands:
  • Continual standing, walking, pushing, and pulling.
  • Ability to perform extensive physical and repetitive activities, including but not limited to stooping, kneeling, pushing, pulling, bending, reaching, carrying, climbing (ladder) and moderate lifting and carrying up to 105 lbs.
  • Working hours may be modified at the discretion of supervisory personnel
Environmental Factors:
  • Work for continuous or extended periods exposed to, but not limited to the sun, heat, cold, poor weather conditions and/or mechanical room or equipment noise.
