Job Title: Springfield Youth Symphony Director
Department: Activities
Pay Grade: Group E-Music Department Honor Group
FLSA Status: Seasonal/Non-Exempt
Reports to: Coordinator IV-Fine Arts
GENERAL PURPOSE
Sponsored by the Springfield Public Schools, the Springfield Youth Symphony consists of the area's finest young musicians. Membership is by audition and is open to both Springfield Public School High School students as well as other highly qualified High School aged musicians from the surrounding area. Membership numbers range from year to year (65-85 typically) based on auditions and literature.
The role of a Director for the Springfield Youth Symphony ensures SYS runs smoothly and works with the assistant director by delegating tasks and collaborating to support the program. The season extends from August through May with rehearsals typically on Monday evenings with at least two concerts per year.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Library/Literature work
Setting up woodwind/brass/percussion sectionals and chair auditions
Serving on the judge's panel for new auditions
Running rehearsals and conducting
Delegating tasks to the assistant director as appropriate
Experience in conducting and teaching large ensembles
Knowledge of orchestral literature and repertoire
Coordinate with the Springfield Junior Youth Symphony and Springfield Youth String Orchestra Directors (i.e. scheduling concerts and recruiting)
QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS
Education and Experience
Instrumental Music K-12 teaching degree/certification preferred
5 years of teaching experience and/or conducting experience (preferably with a symphony orchestra) preferred.
A music performance degree could be considered if the applicant isn't a certified teacher.
Certificates, Licenses and Other Special Requirements
Must pass a Criminal Background Clearance, the results of which must be satisfactory to the District, required.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge of algebra and/or geometry; read technical information, compose a variety of documents, and/or facilitate group discussions; and solve practical problems.
Knowledge based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: appropriate codes, policies, regulations and/or laws; age appropriate activities; lesson plan requirements; stages of child development; and behavioral management strategies.
Skill to perform multiple, technical tasks with a need to routinely upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions.

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements
Work environment is primarily inside, where the noise and temperature levels are moderate.
The work is light work which requires exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force to move objects.
Must possess the physical ability to perceive the nature of sounds, make rational decisions through sound logic and deductive processes, express or exchange ideas by the spoken word, substantial movements (motions) with the hands, wrists, and/or fingers, and discern letters or numbers at a given distance.
Additionally, the following physical abilities are required: balancing, climbing, crawling, crouching, feeling, grasping, handling, hearing, kneeling, manual dexterity, mental acuity, reaching, repetitive motion, speaking, standing, stooping, talking, visual acuity and walking.
